Okay this is an awesome piece that I am sure many have seen. What I am interested in is how the offset segmenting is done. I have completed a few segmented pieces already and would like to try the offset style but cannot figure out how it is done. Can anyone give me a short answer that will guide me in the right direction? is each vertical strip done separately and then glued round as opposed to layers in normal segmenting?

Cypher,

The best way would probably to get hold of Malcolm Tibbetts' book on the how-to since that is one of his. Does it help if I tell you to make an even number of segmented bowl forms, then cut them in half and glue them up as a single piece? Does it help if I tell you that the piece you referenced took 3 bowl forms to make?

Have fun!!

I understand how the overall shape is made by cutting multi bowls into piece and gluing together to for the shape. But what I wanted to know is how the segmenting of each bowl is done in the offset manner.

Just guessing here, I've not seen Malcom's book--but it looks like he uses stave construction, where the segments are full length from top to bottom as opposed to being glued up in horizontal layers.

Guess I'm not understanding what you mean by "offset manner." 😕

The "stave construction" is what I was looking for. I did a google search for stave construction and got my answers. Thanks. I am still courious on what is the best way to hold a stave constructed bowl together dring glue up? But i'll do more research now that is know what it is called. Thanks i relize the question was as clear as mud. thanks for working throug it.

I highly recommend Malcolm's book. I have about 5 books on segmented turning and his is the best and the easiest to understand. The Art of Segmented Woodturning-Malcolm Tibbets. I got mine from Amazon.com
