I thought you guys might find this process interesting.

When you register for an account on here, you fill out the form, are asked to do image recognition, complete it correctly and an email gets sent to that email address. You get the email (if it doesn't get rejected as SPAM, and no we won't complete the form to tell you it isn't SPAM) and click on a link and it is put in a list for me to check. (The checks are done at least once a day, but I post that it may take up to 24 hr to validate). This is because a bot (automated program that tries to post spam) will not answer the email. The proof is that I delete over a 100 "users awaiting email confirmation" or users who never clicked the link, per week. Maybe I should post that stat!

The I go in and check users awaiting confirmation (those who answered the email). Of those, the MASS MAJORITY are out of continent email addresses, mostly Russian domains or Eastern block countries that have no policing over spammers. They get automatically rejected. Then the gmail and yahoo and free mail accounts. Those are tougher. If the user chose a username the same as the front of their email address, they are suspect (even though when they sign up they are told those conditions are an automatic rejection, say 1234qwerty@gmail .com picks a username of 1234qwery). However I still give them the benefit and Google thier email and if it comes up in a SAPM BLOCKED list, they are gone. No list, I Google the IP address and WHOIS the IP. If it shows up on a list, or in boards with Russian or Cyrillic text, they get rejected too. My apologies to those from Russia or those who converse in multiple languages on the internet, you get rejected because your brethren cannot keep their nose clean (profiling?)
The top level domains, AOL, Roadrunner, Comcast etc. They police REAL WELL and are approved.
Still, when any address is rejected they get an email that says this is a form letter and don't take it personally, but to keep the forum clean we are extra cautious and to reapply, email me and you will be approved. 8 out of 10, they take it personally as if I hate them and they are insulted. Some say that I should check the AAW database as they have been a member for 100 years (hyperbole) and I would know they exist! Well, the databases are not connected and you don't have to be an AAW member to be here. Some get huffy and tell me they will never reapply and I must be mad or arrogant to think they should have to and I should just reverse it (you can't, deleted is deleted). Some I accidentally delete a second time because I forgot they applied again, I am human, I am in front of a computer for about 8 hours a day.

And to those, I actually apologize for the inconvenience.

Then there are the other items (photo of the day, misplaced posts, posting in the wrong forum, spam that gets through, commercial want-ads) those your happy moderators Ken and Kurt take care of those.

There, that's how the board runs, my rant is done.... for now.

Steve that was very interesting. I had no idea how much work had to go into validating our requests. Thanks so much for the information and your hard work. I am as bad as most everyone else when it comes to remembering all the people who make this site possible.

Whew, I'm frazzled just reading what you have to do.............nice work!

In a nutshell, people who are overly concerned about their identity being stolen or getting unwanted emails by never using a real name are, in reality, hiding themselves in the middle of the spammers and those who steal identities and expect you to KNOW who they are.

Keep up the good work.

Ruth

Thanks for put your job into perspective, I know it can be a pain sometimes.

Thanks You For Your Work Well Done.

That is the crux of the problem.
Although I didn't post it to achieve any sort of accolades (but thank you) I guess once in a while you just got to get it off your proverbial chest.

Steve I think it was worth posting. As a non computer person I have no idea what goes into running a board like this. I guess we all assume it just sort of floats along on it's own after it is started. This is an eye opener. Thanks to all of you guys for keeping us going.

Those that daily man the barricades are entitled to more than just an occasional rant. Thank you!

Thanks, from one of the rejected!

Although I've visited the site many times, I've only recently signed up, and this seemed a good place for my first post...

As someone who went through the "rejected account" cycle ( a couple of times ), I found it both frustrating... and reassuring; even with my second rejection coming 7 minutes after Steve's email advising that he would be approving it! That was the frustrating part.

The reassurance was knowing that at the heart of the site, there was someone working (in the late evening in this case) at trying to maintain the integrity of the site; someone who was at the same time trying diligently to help a new person get signed in.

Steve's first email reply was within minutes of an email I sent after the first aborted attempt at signing up; and, as we worked through the process his sincerity in trying to represent this site in a positive way was unquestionable.

So, thank you to Steve (and the other Moderators) for all your efforts. I'm looking forward to spending more time browsing around the various threads.

Steve, I can commiserate. I'm an Admin (with Stu in Tokyo) on another vBulletin site, and we have a similar gauntlet new members get to go through. We automatically reject Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, and other common "disposable" addresses, and instead ask folks with those e-mail providers to drop is a note. If they appear legit, we manually create the account for them. It's nothing personal at all, and we have lots of members with those providers, but the extra step has kept our trolling to virtually nil.

We also require real first and last names, and still get a dozen or so people a week who fail to see that requirement in BIG RED LETTERS when they're signing up. 🙄

Thanks for your work here...I can really appreciate what goes into running one of these. 😉

Here is an excellent example (maybe the robots will pick up this email address and spam them)
Google this email address xebifo@hondahero.cn

It all looks good. In order to get to this point it had to be at least a valid spoofed address.

Now Google this IP address 78.129.214.140

Welp. Yup. That would be me. 😱

Just yesterday in fact. 😱😱 Nice thing, though, is that once I got my act together it didn't take long for y'all to approve my membership. I belong to so many forums that it's easy for me to miss those warning flags and blow right by them when signing up.

As well it's all too easy to forget those who are constantly working in the background in any organization. So... thanks for giving us an opportunity to see what you are doing Steve. I certainly can appreciate it.

I do have to wonder if part of your job couldn't be automated a little bit to ease some of the work?
