how far west and how far north would i have to go before mesquite large enough to turn is sold as fire wood 😕😱🙁

that is i drive into town look in local classified section in local paper and find someone selling mesquite as fire wood, buy load and head home 😀

Yeah, they turn it into charcoal for BBQ in Texas - or cut it up into little pieces for the rest of us to buy for our smokers. Anybody in Texas got some for Charlie to work with that isn't already charcoal or smoke wood?

You can find Texas mesquite in firewood quantities west of I45 and south of the Red River. I suggest contacting some of the wood turning clubs here in Texas about sources of mesquite suitable for turning. Lots of wood on the ground around here, but most of it is only good for the cooking fire🙁. My bowls and hollow forms seem to consume a lot of epoxy and CA🙄.

How about 100yds west if I-95?

The Bass Pro in Richmond has mesquite in 15# bags. Some of the logs in my bag were almost 6" in diameter.. The bark was fairly tight and the wood was relatively free of end checks.. The one piece I've turned so far made a really attractive twig pot.

If you find it get the PURPLE bag -- it has the log rather than the chunks.
