With the advent of using carbide inserts in some of the turning tools such as Hunter, Easy Wood Tool and Woodchuck has anyone adapted this technology to hollowing tools or hollowing systems?
Yes I use it all the time! cuts very nice and I have the round cutter so I just rotate it when it gets dull, I got tired of trying to sharpen my Trent Bosch hollowing tool, so I asked Trent at the Richmond symposium how to sharpen his tool and he said don't! use this...a hunter insert! you can get them online for about 10.00 each if you know where to look!
The carbide tips work great. and you don't have to sharpen.
I know they are available for the Bosch tools and the Jamieson tools and probably others.
I have a carbide tips in a set of Bosch tools which I use once in while.
Mostly I use the traditional tipped Bosch tools for hollowing because they remove wood faster than the carbide cutters do for me.
I do mostly face grain hollowing. I sharpen the leading edge (right side) of the tool and it will easily take a 1/4 to 3/8 slice when I'm hogging out with sweeping cuts from outer wall toward center drilled hole.
Using the carbide cutters I can't comfortably take much over an 1/8 inch in a cut. There just isn't much cutter on the side.
On end grain hollowing the carbides should be about as fast as traditional since in cutting center to the sidewall I would loose some of the side edge cutting that I get in face grain work.
Dennis,
Randy Privett of Monster Hollowing Tool fame included a carbide holder and carbide tip with the monster system that I bought. I use it mainly for finishing but have used it a little for roughing. By the way this hollowing system is great!
