I posted this on penturners.org and got a few ideas, but I want to take it a little farther. As one guy put it, this is Herringbone 4.5.

I want to put a herringbone ring in a segmented bowl. I know it's all about the angles just not sure where to start. I know how to do regular glue-ups like this just trying to get the round part down.

I've been trying to find something about it too. The pattern is six-sided, if that helps. That is a horrifically expensive pen, by the way.

$3000 MSRP IIRC.

I can do a lot of trial and error for that much money. I've pretty much got the pen blank figured out. What I want to do now is an 8-10" diameter ring like this to add to a segmented bowl. That's where I'm having trouble figuring the angles.

I know this doesn't help you right now, but I would like to know how to do the regular glue up for this pattern. Once I know that, I will be in the same boat you are in trying to use it on a bowl, and will be trying to figure that out. If I can, I would be more than happy to post it if someone else hasn't already.

Please let me know or point me in the direction of a tutorial if there is one on doing the regular glue up. Thanks,

Matt

Bryant, thank for making my head hurt! I think I might have figured it out. To do a four row pattern for a 7.48" diameter turning you would need 94 pieces per row or 376 pieces. Each piece could be 1/2" x 3/4". The outboard side should be 3/16 thick and tapper down to 5/32" along the 3/4" side. Lay one row at a time which is going to be a super challenge. Let me know if this works out for you and how you go about the glue up. Bigger might be better though. In any case it would look cool if the alignment is correct. Another way would be to make a veneer from a flat pattern and stitch the seem. That would be too easy though. Good luck!

Thanks Walt, I've been playing with this in Sketchup. I have not had a lot of time lately, due to school work, to get into the shop and try what seems to work on the computer screen. If I can make it work, it should look really cool.
