Hi-I usually turn bowls. My spindle turning exp. is with 7" blanks for handles. A few week pots.
I live in a small community. One of the police men just stopped by (after a phone conversation). He is a tin smith/leather maker for a hobby. He wants a 30" long cone. 6" on one end and 4" on the other-just flat ends.Maple or oak.
Piece of cake!!!
I need to get the wood -I am cutting fire wood from 8 ft long lengths. (maple and oak cut last sept /oct), and I see a piece that may just make it on one end for 6" (cutting out the pith).
My questions are: will this whip if 33-34" long?? (have no steady rest)-am guessing not a problem. He said it doesn't have to be "pretty:
I need all the help from the "gendarmes" I can possibley get-living alone on a dirt road!!!. Told him I would do it for nothing when he asked.
I don't do things half assed.( as long as I realize they are half assed!!!!)
Any suggestions?? Finish??? (he;ll be pounding into it). Is 1yr old cut wood ok??? Gretch

No problem with whip or flutter as long as you use a cup center and keep it properly adjusted. Wood is pretty green unless you had it roughed a year ago. It'll oval on him after you cut it. If that's acceptable, should be no problem. 5% on the quarter, maybe 8% on the face for shrink. If not, will laminated do?

Use your big roughing gouge or a straight chisel/skew in stages, then mount up a pipe on plywood temporary toolrest that will allow you to make the final dimensions in an uninterrupted pass.

BTW, public safety types HAVE to come when called, no matter what. Arrive at risk, be cussed out for taking so long, then dodge vomit on EMS or furnishings on a domestic complaint. BTDT

Public safety

32 years ago, my husband is out of town (where are these guys when you need them!!!!!!!!! ????)I had streamed cleaned the house rugs, and my daughter(3 yr old) and I went to st. clean rugs of "serrogate" parents to me. When I came home at 8:30 pm to rural house, the back sliding door open and all the drawers in bedroom ransacked, and "curios" in living room, as well as stereo taken. Footprints in the pristine rugs. I called our local police. "yeh we'll come". 25 min later=no response. My 2 male neighbors are now with me. No local police another 15 min later. I called and they said "oh, the police car blew and engine, so I guess we'll have to call the state police. " You guess" I said." give me the number and I will call them"!!!!!. So I did, and it turned out to be a friend of my brother-also in the state police. I guess I have never forgiven (locals) them for failing to inform me as I was a temporary single mom with an toddler. My neighbor offered to give me a 22 revolver with maskin tape on the trigger for safety sake (10:30 pm ). I said "no". I called him an hour later and requested the gun which he brought over. Then I got to sleep.!!!!! I need some brownie points, noe that I got his home phone!!!!! 😀Gretch

A one hear old log in that diameter will still be very wet and will probably split. Can you glue up some dry Oak? 30" in that diameter will not chatter so you won't have any problems turning it.
Been robbed in every house I've lived in but this one. I almost always have a weapon with me now and try to visit the house at odd hours whenever I can to try and make it more secure.
We shouldn't have to live like this. The sad thing is it's probably only one person but they can hit so many houses and hurt so many people before they are caught. Drugs are such a big deal around here and that's what causes most of it.

When I get to the larger log in the fire wood pile (maybe next week) , I may try cutting down the pith, and then cutting on the bandsaw. Depends on what the end looks like. I find that logs that have very little splits on the end are less likely to split afterward-BUT NOT ALL THE TIME TRUE!!!! I don't have a planner (functional at least), may be hard for me to glue up. May give it a try tho.
BTW I have a 22 rifle all ready to go. (red sq, raccoons, ground hogs). Yeh, I know people say it wouldn't protect me, but a well placed shell at the patella or maybe a foot and a half higher would deter most people . I'm ready😀 Gretch

I think I'd ask him if he can tolerate a bit of oval shape. Sounds like he's going to be hammering/forming leather over it, so I'd almost bet he could.

My avatar is a bit of a clue as to how much time SWMBO spent on her own. I went overseas and then, even when home, I spent one week in three in an alert shack, not to mention all the time flying. Since we're out in the boonies, the crew asked if I had a pistol for her. I said no, that she had a barking dog and a 12ga pump. She had instructions to chamber loudly when the dog was getting breathless.

Your dispatch should be much better now after 9/11. All agencies are using the trunked radio system that replaced the LVHF State system and the mix of VHF repeaters in county and municipalities. Everyone can now be dispatched by the same center, so urgent calls are cross-dispatched. Burglaries - burglar gone - are not emergent.

Thanks<MM

Michael-that's good to know!!!! Gretch

Keep the centers on the ends for remounting at a later date. He may ask you to resurface the cone after pounding on it for a while 🙂 In that case, why not make it 7" on one end, so taking about 1/8" each time you resurface it will give the cone 8 lives 😀 I guess it would have to start out at least 6" longer though...

Th policeman brought me a zerox from a page along with another tool-looks antique. The "wooden former" is 6" wide one one end and tapers to 4" on the other end.-over 30". the ends are flat. On one end there is a ? 4"square of wood that projects? 1" (function??maybe it's for the cooper to stablize??) ) and the other end a ?3" tenon that projects on the other end. So I guess I could leave them on to "refinish" ???? Maybe I'll have to do some research for curiosity's sake. Problem will be to get the wood in the first place. Gretch
