I have done a few craft projects with a similar problem. The current project is coffee scoops-kit by woodcraft.
After truing up a blank (6/8"-1" diameter) and drilling a hole to receive a brass barrel, the barrel is glued off the lathe and inserted into the blank. the glued barrel and blank end/or ends are then to be sanded so that the barrel is flush with the wood (sanding then maybe 1/16-1/8"). I use a belt sander. How do you get the thing perpendicular to the axis????? (i.E sanding the end gain end of the spindle? ) I have already made the blank round. Their instructions show some kind of jig but the blank is square. (my woods are cut with band saw roughly so there isn't real squareness.) The wood/barrel is then put in pen mandrel. Should be a simple answer, but my simple mind isn't coming up with it😱, Gretch

Since you don't have a straight side to reference, you'll have to work up a jig with reference to the hole you bored. Something like an "L" on its side with a bolt to slide the tube over, I should guess.

Making one side parallel to the bolt will allow you to clamp (or use the miter gauge) on your sander table for fine tuning.

Or you could use a tablesaw to get two square sides to reference for all operations.

truing up ends of round blanks

Have been out of town. Can you tell me whether this mill works on round blanks? or does it have to be square???? Couldn't quite figure out the parts to the pen mill (I don't do pens and a few months ago got a pen mandrel to do some tooth pick and perfume holders) I could problably spend the time to make squarish blanks, but sometimes I work with spalted wood and want to see if the scrap I have will round down to an acceptable size before wasting a "kit " on it and having to throw it away. The mill references off the hole in the center and squares the end to it.So it will be square to the hole no matter what the shape is.Just make sure to get the proper size for the hole your using.I posted the set because it has most of the standard sizes but you can get a specific size for your job.

To square end of a piece, I use a sanding disk that replaces the blade on my table saw. I cut a length of 1"x2" pine, drilled two holes in it and mounted it at a 90 degree angle to the sanding disk; used 1/4-20 machine screws with large washers and wing nuts. Saw top is not solid. I place the wood piece along the 1x2 and carefully place the end up against the sanding disk. Got the disk and sanding disks at Woodcraft. Hope this helps. Cheaper than a disk sander!
