I'm new here, and just wanted to say hi. I posted some pics of some of my work, just to give everyone an idea of the things I do. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! Hope you all enjoy looking at weird turnings😀

Dave

These are:

Pecan (clawfoot)

Ash (turnip shaped, with a "root" around the bottom). Natural edge. Just sanded the fluffly bark off, down to the hard layer.

Tulip poplar vase about 12" tall

and a 13.5" elm piece, i'm working on now. It's less than half done. Just finished turning the lid today, about to start carving it out over the coming weeks.

thanks for sharing, i like the 3rd turning the best

Welcome Dave!

I like the detail you've added to the carving, linking the legs to the vessel part in a way that brings the design together. Nice. Organic and whimsical come to mind. You are expressing a personal approach.

Weird but Cool

Welcome Dave.

I looked at your work before reading your post, my thought was "Weird", but very cool.

You must do a lot of carving to create those.

Nice work.

Wait, I am the leader! haha. I control my strange minions, from my small wood shop in alabama, lol.

Betty, I use the term "organic" almost exclusively when describing my work to people. It just seems to fit. My favorite paintings are by Max Ernst and my favorite architect is Antoni Gaudi. I'm leaning in the direction of incorporating Gaudi's organic shapes, with surrealist forms.

Yes, there is a ton of carving in these. Trying to turn a piece, while leaving enough "meat" on, to be able to carve on it later, and have it all fit together, is the first step. Then it's just a small fortune's worth of time to eliminate the waste, and then add all the detail.

I CAN make more normal turnings, and do, from time to time, as they don't take much time, and seem to sell well. But, when I put a piece of wood on the lathe these days, I see two hollow forms, one on top, and one on bottom. I have to hollow out both sides, so I can have legs that are all one piece with the HF. Some people don't believe me when i tell them that these are all one piece of wood, haha.

Thanks for saying Hi, everyone!

Dave

Thanks James! The guy that got me into carving my work (he's been at it for about 30 years, half that in hawaii, making stuff for galleries), feels the same as you. He said he's never seen anything like it.

Here's a link to some of his work:http://www.gadsdentimes.com/article...1016/NEWS?Title=Museum-gets-new-display-cases

On the left side of the article, there's a link that says "GMA Presents: Works of Genius" and that opens up a small picture window with some more pics.

I have a bigger, prettier piece of pecan sitting here, and I think this time, that I'm going to carve sharp teeth all around the rim, plus claws on the bottom. I think that would look really strange.

I like the contrast between rounded, graceful curves, and something sharp. Like the clawfoot, and the poplar flower.

Haha, the flower DID have feminine legs standing on their toes, but it looked nearly pornographic like that, so i carved off the calves, and the feet🙁
