This is somewhat of a rehash...apologies, tried to find original thread, but failed...regarding the Boze 30 noise cancelling ear buds. How far away can the music source be for the blue tooth to be consistent while working on the lathe with the DC going? My thought was to plug a blue tooth transmitter into my XM radio, but that's on the other end of the shop. Thanks.

This depends on the BT transmitter you use. I have a cheap one (after market non OEM) on my Bose Lifestyle 4800 and the range for one depends on the angle from the transmitter. We will assume that for a shop stereo will be no more than 45 degrees and that is fine. Now for a second variable (and yes I have Bose BT headphone (not noise canceling as is only for TV ) when turning your head even at distances of 20 feet you may degrade or lose sound. I cannot speak for overall range but I do believe the placement and quality of the transmitter will impact that significantly.

By the way I think this is the discussion you want: http://www.aawforum.org/community/index.php?threads/noise-cancelling-headset.13641/

Let's see, you are trying to keep noise out of your ears but wear headphones for BT? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of hearing protection?

If you are going to pair it with a BT device I believe that it has to be something like an iPhone or iPad , etc that can run the app. Of course, If you don't want to listen to music while turning then you don't need to connect it to anything. I think that I would prefer the Bose QC20 because it has better noise cancelling and is not a BT device. It can be plugged into an audio source if that is what you would like.

That's it...thanks. So, has Alan Z tested these lower cost NC earbuds yet? Did I miss the review?

I prefer to have no interruptions or noise while turning. One time, my wife came into the shop and tapped me on the shoulder. Had to stop and mop. Told her to move into my peripheral vision in the future.

Years ago I was making repairs on some high voltage equipment while it was energized, someone thought it would be a good idea to take photos of the process to document for the future repair procedures. Seeing a bright flash of a camera while working high voltage systems is the last thing you want to see. That was the last photo that camera ever took.

Actually Bill there are many bluetooth transmitters that can be used with any device you can connect a phone jack to and the Bose and other BT devives will pick it up

That would work if you only want to play music, but that wouldn't give you the ability to run the Bose app so that you could remotely control the QC30 such as adjusting the amount of noise cancellation.

I wear my QC 30 everyday. Today I was cutting a log about 30 feet or more from the shop, I didnt loose connection. I can leave the iPhone down on my desk and walk all over the 3 car garage and still be connected. I was using my Husqvarna 372XP today, a beast with a 71CC engine, super loud, I only wore my face shield and my QC 30's, they were more than enough protection. With my helmet and ear muffs over them, I can still hear the music while I use the chainsaw..
