My first live feed of any kind. This should be fun..

MONDAY JULY 2nd at 7pm eastern standard time. (Im in Delaware) I will be doing the final turning of this vase. Live on my Instagram page (Eli Polite) is my Instagram page. If you think the neck of the vase is amazing wait till you see what’s under the paint!!! I started this project about a year and a half ago. It started with an idea. Than a small prototype that I changed in order to get the design for the main body. After a year of prototypes, practice rings, frustration, and disappointments. I was able to begin the actual project. If you have been following it. It has taken roughly 6 months to get it to this point. There are only 160 hours into it but i had to Fit this project in where I could. I stay pretty busy and this project was more for fun than anything. I am so nervous about this thing that I had nightmares about blowing it up on my lathe live in front of people. This project is not really a “wood turning project” out of all the hours spent on this only about 8 total hours will be spent on the lathe. The majority of this was done on a table saw. Any way sorry for the long winded post. I hope to see you Monday. We can find out together if this project was worth the wait

Instagram is not like face book or twitter. It’s is a socal Medea group that is basically all about images and short videos. The amount of talent on there is insane. Art, woodwork, all crafts really. I find it odd that this group does not have its own Instagram account some of the best talent I have seen is on there.

Any way if you not on there it’s free to sign up my Instagram page is just (elipolite) I will be making a YouTube video but that could be weeks after I turn it live on Instagram. I will be sure to post it here

I don't use facebook and have no idea why anyone would use Twitter. I guess I'm must a neanderthal. I can kill a Mastadon with a spear however if anyone needs that skill.

Facebook and Instagram give people a way to reach the entire world from there home. Sure there is a lot of BS on facebook but I have also made quite a bit of extra cash on my face book page. The reality is, it’s a tool that allows you to show and sell your work world wide. Internet tools are what killed toysRus and other big stores. You no longer need a gallery that takes up to a 50% commission on your work and your not limited to whatever walk through trafficking you get. My last permotion reached nearly 20,000 people in 3 days. It allows me to track not only what states and country I’m reaching but what age group and gender. If your a craftsman or an artist what ever your missing a huge audience by simply not taking a few hours to figure it out.

You can make money just from your content on these platforms. Some of my videos have over 25,000 views on Instagram where else am I going to reach audiences like that? YouTube Facebook Instagram should all be tools that crafts man use

Eli what program are you using to control your cameras? I'm assuming that you will have at least 2 or more cameras running? You should come and join us at lucidwoodturners.com We are group managed by @AlanZ of woodturners using technology to advance woodturning. I use VMix and currently have 5 cameras, along with several titles, photo slides, a wireles mic, a back up corded usb mic, a NDI input an several more things. I do a lot of Facebook live, have not done Instagram live yet.. Last time I checked of my almost 1600 followers, most were from Iran, I do not think they will be ordering any of my work... As Emmet Kane told me at Arrowmont, 500 likes dont mean a sell, funny, sad, but true...

I'd like to join you tonight but still don't have any idea how to access instagram or find you. I guess the world is just passing us older computer illiterate guys up. Just tried to sign up for facebook. Could not get past step 2 "get friends". That's why I don't do this stuff. It just seems everything fights me. What should be simple isn't for me at least.

Going to try it later. I did manage to finally get a Facebook account. Don't know where to go from there but my wife is going to try and help.

John to find FB friends just enter a name in the search box and the request friends. I sent you a request . Click on the globe on the blue line at top to read requests or posts to you

Gerald friend requests are why I got out of facebook the first time. I clicked on pretty much all the names I recognized but then after a month or so I had so much material to go through I could not even remotely keep up. Even trying to keep up with relatives was rediculous because you also had posts from all of their friends. I've heard there are ways to narrow that down somehow. I'm also curious how people seem to keep up with woodturning on Facebook.

Every day my email inbox is crammed with messages from Facebook wanting me to look at pictures posted by somebody I never heard of and a raft load of strangers who want to be my friend. If I didn't have a real life I suppose that there's no shortage of online alternatives.

Www.instagram.com/elipolite should get you there. I like Instagram because all you really have to do is post photos. Of course there are all sorts of hashtags and stories that seem complicated to me, but you can post a photo or video and ignore the other stuff if you want. I enjoy Emiliano’s instagram.

Everything turned out great. No pun intended

Zoom in on the photos for more detail. It is still at least 2 weeks till the finish is done. I will go live agin when I finish it off. That’s the most satisfying part any way.

I kept the overall design as much of a secret as I could until I turned it

Starting from the bottom. Bottom ring is real ebony. Maple veneer, than super curly Blackwood “acacia”, than a feature ring that is wenge and maple inlay. Yes the pattern gos all the way through, than maple veneeer, a thin ring of Blackwood. The main body is wenge and mahogany accented by maple. Than a ring of real ebony. The neck is Blackwood with maple dowels and veneer. Topped with real ebony

Overall I’m still unsofisticated. At this point I have a go pro as well as a cannon eos DSLR that camera still needs some equipment. Both are new. I purchased them in the last week. So I have nearly 2k into it and I still need to spend about $500 to 1k more befor I’m 100% up and running with proper mic’s and lighting

Before you spend any more money you should contact @AlanZ He is our official AAW mentor when it comes to technology. I too have a GoPro, I connect it to my computer via El Gato Camlink, a reasonable option at $120. Problem with GoPros is that they have too much wide angle. Most of us are using web cams, the Logitech's are a good choice, just bought my 4th one, the 925C , and I have other models as well. Today I run a test with Dave Hulett, I'm doing a live remote demo for his club on July 14th, and my best camera was my big Sony DV HD camera, great zoom, clear picture, connected with an HDMI with El Gato Camlink. I had 5 cameras all working great. My favorite is my movable iPhone 5 camera with the NDI, the phone connects thru the NDI app to VMix, so you can roam around the shop with it... When it comes to microphones, I have 2, a wireless Plantronics with noise cancelling and a USB with a cable, I can choose either one. Lots of good threads at our Lucidwoodturners.com

You made my day! Thanks for the feedback! Aloha

Sorry I missed it. We have grandkids here and I simply didn't have time to figure out how to get on to Instagram. I'll try to be up to speed for the next one.

I will look into all of that

Just ask any 9 year old how to operate a computer. My grandson, now 11, showed me how to access the stopwatch on my cellphone so I can time each coat of CA glue o r finish.

Heheh... I just wander off and fiddle around with something else for a bit... I figure as long as I don't get distracted for a few hours, I'm good :)

Bill, you can turn off those FB notifications so your inbox isn't cluttered.

John L,

I wouldn't have a Facebook account. (I look at my wife's once in a while-its a confusing, sometimes awful mess) Instagram is way easier to deal with and understand. Basically, you choose the people you want to follow, there's almost no BS or rudeness, just pictures of good (and bad) work. You don't have to look at dogs, kids or vacation photos unless you want to, and you don't hear from friends and families of people you follow. You'll see more turning pictures in one day than in a couple of weeks here, and I've been surprised how many people I've never heard of are doing really good work. There's not a lot of discussion as the posts are replaced with new ones so not really setup for a long discussion, but there's typically a question and answer or two. No time to get sidetracked or off-topic. I follow Emiliano who posts pretty regularly and he also posts some nice island shots. I stick to posting just woodturning pictures or videos and try to post something most days. I also follow potters, sculptors, metalworkers etc. A lot of inspiration there.
