Greets all,

I attended a fantastic Stewart Batty demo last weekend in Columbus OH, inwhich he discussed tool steel(s) and sharpening methods. He stated that harder/tougher steel alloys such as V15 and 2060, were not effectively sharpened by aluminum oxide wheels as they merely chipped the cutting edge (on a very small scale) and did not cut it as it would HSS/A11/2030 - in effect V15/2060 are too hard for AO wheels.

This being said: I went home, put a clean edge on my Glaser V15, chewed up some wood, then honed the edge and cut some more - and WOW, what a difference a hone makes with this tool! I haven't noticed the same improvement with honing HSS.

Anyone had any experience with SG wheels? any good suppliers? Should I switch to A11/2030 for new tools and just hone the V15? Any guides on Alloys and their specific hardening techniques?

Also, I noticed that Packard is now selling SG sandpaper (Similar to Norton 3X), unfortunately its only stickyback and not hook/loop/newwave 🙂, hopefully they will develop this soon.

Hi Devo,
That was a great demo! I also took the 2 day class before the demo and was overwhelmed with info and practice. Stuart is a bundle of energy. ( must be all that tea ).

I think I saw in the new Packard catalog the SG wheels. I believe Craft Supplies also carry them.
