Hi, just started turning and i would like to buy a glaser chisel.Ican not find a source or price. Can any body assist? Are they that good?

Could be tough

Jerry Glaser has retired from making tools. His company was bought up by Paulo Marin in California. He marketed the Glaser Signature tools through a company called Cryo Engineering Technology.

At this point in time I am not sure he is still marketing these tools. You can try contacting him thru his website to see where it goes.'

Yes, they are that good

Up in the main section there is a recent thread on tool comparison. You may find the discussion helpful.

Doug Thompson tools are the same steel. You buy them with out handles. There are many after market handles that you can buy, or make your own. I have some of the Glaser handles/gouges, and while the steel is nice, I don't like the extra weight in the handles. Fine for short term use, but not so good for hours of turning. I prefer the wood handles, straight, with no bumps or humps.

Doug now sells handles as well. You can get them with our without the steel shot. They are rounded over squares so they don't roll off the lathe and you can have them engraved if you like.

Just got a bowl gouge in from Dave. It is the small 3/8 tool. I like it!!!😀😀
Have a Glazer tool in the tool box. Never been used, doubt I'll ever use it as it is a piece of history, my only regret is that I took the wrapping off and trashed it.

The website

The Glaser site you have heard about is still around and supposedly will have tools available "soon" the website is http://www.glaserhitec.com/ and does have some current information. Most of the pictures are still from the 2006 AAW symposium. I had a great time there and my son received a bowl gouge and scraper from Paulo Marin for helping out. I have since inherited them and even with his name on them they seem to work quite well. I use the Thompson tools mostly though; as I like to make my own handles and the steel holds a great edge.
