This is a head's-up to anyone needing a good quality 16" lathe.

I'd buy this in a heartbeat, if it weren't for the distance. 🙁

I've been extremely happy with my longbed Woodfast lathe. Have been using it extensively for 21 years, without a single problem. Still have the original bearings in mine, no play whatsoever. I see some rust on this one. No problem to clean it up and run with it.

Darn it.....wish it were closer!

Woodfast Shortbed Lathe

That's dirt cheap for one of those. I have one here in Australia. I needed to turn a platter that was to be 2ft dia., so I jacked up the headstock with plywood spacers. Worked very well, no vibration. Had to put in a longer belt but left the original one there so I could return the lathe to original easily.

There are a lot of turners in that neck of the woods. It won't last long. I'll be heading up that way to be John Jordan's assistant at Marc Adams school the first of September. Someone should buy it and attend the class to learn to use it. It is an excellent lathe.

Doesn't look as if the guard has been used at all. 😉

I agree -- these are wonderful lathes. I have one that's a bit newer and wouldn't trade it for anything.

The guard must be an after market add-on. To my knowledge, the Woodfast never came with the cages.

A snall word of caution

Probably not an issue but it looks very much like this lathe was ran with the belt off according to the information that they haven't done anything to it. If so the motor runs quiet and smooth, the headstock might have issues. Seems unlikely and I would be willing to gamble on it, same deal as the OP though, so far away that I would pay twice as much to go get it as they are asking for it. Anyone interested might ask if the spindle can be turned by hand.

A good lathe at a fair price.
Appears to be a five constant speeds via belt change.

EVS would double the price plus.

Another plus is this lathe is surprisingly easy to move.
Central fla club has 16" with EVS.

Someone built a sort of wooden hand truck for it with five foot 2x4 handles
Tilt it back into the tailgait and it slides into the bed of a pickup. One person can do it.

Did this lathe originally come with a Leeson Farm Duty Motor.

Yes, it's the original "farm duty" 1 1/2hp Leeson motor, as equipped by CSUSA. If I had that lathe, I'd convert to variable speed anyway. My original Leeson FD motor is now being used as a stand alone buffer.

Didn't last long. Someone did the "Buy it Now". Good deal.

Yep, just noticed that..........:cool2:

If it had been anywhere reasonably close to me, I'd have bought it myself. I had been watching it for awhile, before I decided it's just too much trouble for me to buy it myself. At that point, I decided to give the "heads up" and post a link to it in this forum. I would have used the "buy it now", as well. The difference was only $125, and the value/quality of that lathe was much higher......probably $2500, or more.

I hope it was someone on this forum.......because I'd like to hear all about it, and it's role with the new owner.

Odie,
I called the president of my local turning club and had him post it to our members. We are in Indiana just 50 miles away so I hope someone in the club bought it. I have that woodfast lathe except mine is a 2hp and has variable speed and reverse but what a buy.
I love my lathe, and i bought mine in Chicago and over ebay also. I drove in the middle of that town to pick it up and what a feat. I hate big cities and i hate driving in traffic especially with a 6oo lb lathe in the back of a pick up. Gary

Hey Guys,

Just got my ID approved so I could participate here.

This baby is MINE! Picked it up this past Saturday. Before buying it, I did talk to the guy on the phone, and had him verify that the bearings and spindle were good. He used a straight edge to make sure there was no wobble. Based on what he said, it was worth the gamble for the 2.5 hr drive.

So to cover some of the questions...the guy is a auction guy. He buys and sells stuff as his income. This one was actually part of a school woodshop (i wish my woodshop had this level of quality!), but it didn't really look like it had gotten used much. In order to move it, he took the tail stock, the banjo, and the bed off of the stand, so thats why the belt was also skewed, and there were no bolts in the top. But it was all together to verify that it was good to go when i got it.

So there are/were only two issues with it. The first is that the drive spur had been in there for a long time....LONG time. it took some pb blaster and some patience to get it out, but i got it.

The other thing is still sort of an issue. The indexing pin seems to be stuck. The whole assembly rotates if i try to line up the outer pin with the hole in the wheel. Not sure what to do about that one, though.

My plans for it are to get a 3 phase motor and VFD to convert it to vs, as well as reversible. Unless there is a mod to make an actual spindle lock, that's probably all I will do. But for now, I'm having a blast turning on something so quality! its like night and day compared to my old 50's Craftsman/King Seeley! 🙂

Scott,
you did get a steal, even having to mess with a few problems. I have a 2 hp woodfast short bed and I paid $1500 for mine and that was a real bargain You will never wear it out. Gary
