General International Lathe Feedback

25-200m1-vs+

My wife turns on a 25-200. She loves it, quality built, no problems after 3 to 4 years. Tripped it's internal overload one time... drilling a 2 5/8" forstner bit five inches deep in hard maple Making coffee cups, slowed down on next one and completed three more. She turns and hollows hard maple all the time.

I Really enjoy mine. I pretty much got it couple of months ago. I have yet been able to bog down the 3/4 hp motor.
My only issue with it is the Knock out bar should be 3 more inches longer. and that is the only issue... OHH wait... One other thing... in the box is safety goggles... like the kind you use in Science class in High school.... I pitched mine... they may be good in Biology class but for wood working... I will happily use my face shield thank you.

Andrew,

Some follow-up questions:

Have you noticed any issues with the mass of the tailstock given such a large swing?

Have you noticed any latency or torque issues? With that in mind, have you attempted to turn a piece appoaching the max swing diameter?

-I noticed on one of Bob's Hamilton's YouTube videos that the motor sounded like it was slowing down and speeding up as he cut. He said he didn't notice a difference in the cut and thought I might be detecting latency in the speed controller.

Thanks in advance for answering my inquiry!

Best regards,

Matt

DC controllers will do the slow down and speed up if you run them at low RPM. What we do on our club lathe which is a Nova 3000 with aftermarket DC, is to simply change pulleys so you are running in the upper speed range. You'll get more power and it will run smoother.

Matt,
I haven't gone all that large. I keep it on the center pully and run from there.
A bowl is forth coming soon as I can complete the 100 or so pens.

I'm running a 1hp DC drive on my 18" General 160 with VS Reeves drive also.
I left the reeves drive on so I can slow down the reeves and speed up the DC drive to control the torque and it works GREAT.:cool2:

Hi Bill,

It is hard to get all the specs on the 25-200. Can you tell me the tool post diameter and if your wife has ever turned a bowl on the outboard side. Comments if so. A picture of the lathe with something on it would be great. I just noticed the weight is significantly higher than the 14" or the Delta 46-460.

Regards,

Matt
