Based on reports from a couple of turners, and a couple of conversations with Grizzly tech support and such, it looks like they have replaced the G0698 with the G0733 in the new 2012 Catalog which will hit most likely on Jan. 1st

It appears from my conversation with tech support today, that the appearance of the G0733 is pretty much like the G0698 but is white in color. The tech guy said he only has one picture of it, and no further info at this time. It is reportedly an 18x47 lathe. I know Hare & Forbes out of Australia has a white model, and so does Laguna. I guess the color scheme will match Grizzly's Polar Bear line.

I wonder if they have upgraded the machine to have a hand wheel or any other features that would be considered an improvement? Just thinking out loud here and pondering the "what if's."

For example........should the lathes be the same unit with a hand wheel addition, then could an upgrade be done to the G0698 with parts such as the longer spindle and the hand wheel?

There will be a price increase from what I understand.......I don't know how much yet, but if the features increase, then maybe it will be worth it. I wonder about an improved banjo..........the one on the G0698 is identical to the Jet 1642evs. It would be nice to have one similar to the 3520b.

It could be that they just changed the model number and the color and it will be the same unit............

We will take a look, and figure things out as the new unit is unveiled........until then, we can speculate! 😀

marketing

Have you ever noticed how they (food, tools, kitty litter, plants, etc, etc) "gracefully" get around increasing price?? by changing the packaging, adding a smidgen here, decrease the amount of the product, "improving by adding "water". etc. etc. Griz may see they have a market, and are "improving" things which of course will cost more $. Sometimes I am a skeptic🙂 Gretch

Very true.......just get used to it! Our dollars are not worth what they were worth on the international market, even just a few months ago.

Things like Grizzly lathes are, in my opinion, going to go up in price at a lesser rate than the more premium lathes.......because their customer base is more numerous and price conscious than your average customer who is contemplating a Oneway, Vicmarc, etc.......

Then again, I could be completely wrong in my reasoning.......😀

sounds like you guys talk to tech support a lot.

Hi Kevin,

Thought you might chime in on this one.........been a while hasn't it? Yes, we do talk to tech support.........on rare occasion.........I do it because I am interested in this series of lathes. I want my understanding to be complete, so I will know all my options at any given time should a need arise for a new part or if an upgrade becomes available.

My G0698 has been going strong for two years........not a single issue whatsoever. I did replace the belt one time......due to my own mistake. It did not really need changing, but I had mis-aligned the belt on one of the pulleys, and it messed up one of the ribs on the belt just a little.....my fault, but it was not necessary. I am one who likes to keep my machines in optimal working order.

Hope you are having the best of service with your Jet! My G0698 has been superb from day one!

Grizzly lathe G0698 discontinued vs New Grizzly lathe G0733 Both 18"x 47"

Just recieved my new Grizzly catalog & set it next to the 2011 catalog & both read the same in the discription. Looks different because of the color white headstock & ways green legs. They are even on the same page 134 in both catalogs. Old price $1350.00 New price $1695.00

Look at all that labor in stripping and new colors-worth every penny of increase!!!!😉😉Gretch

Well, I just got my new catalog and can't see any difference between the old and "new" lathes besides the paint. I suspect they haven't done themselves any favors in increasing their lathe business with such a price increase for this lathe. The shipping even went up. That's too bad as it seemed to be a good deal for the old price. Congrats to those who were able to snag one of the old ones for the old price.

Interesting thought about the QC, but it makes me wonder why they would need ~25% of the price, all in one jump, to cover it. Was the product that bad in the first place? I don't think so based on the reviews given in the threads on this site. I suspect it is likely the cost of the materials as most manufactures have increased the prices of their lathes in the last few years without changes. Mine is just a simple observation that it is too bad they had to raise the price. I have many pieces of Grizzly equipment because I've felt like the quality was comensurate with the price; however, I can't say their typical machine quality is worth a higher price. Sorry, no breaks, but let's hope you are correct. I guess we'll all have to wait for someone to take the plunge and let us know.

Everything has gone up in price. I bought my Powermatic 3520A for $2000. Now the 3520B which has changed a little but is still basically the same lathe is selling for $3700 just 5 years later.

Size yes, but cost depends on time of year and the warranty doesn't compare. Anyway, I am sure the lathe is still a pretty good deal and viable option for those in the mid-range lathe market.

Regards,

I see a Oneway lathe that is something everyone can't afford.😱😀 & what is that in the background a Laguna 18x47????k
I've also considered Vicmark lathe & the Rikon 70-450 lathe. They cost a wee bit more.
I do have the 2 HP motor & VFD to run the Vicmark, so I could order a bench top model & weld up my own stand.

Warranty's
It kinda like when I had the motor in my truck replaced the shop wanted $5000 for their motor & installation,"it has a 5 year warranty" I looked at the shop owner & said we both know if the motor lasts through the common one year warranty it'll probably last as long as I care to drive the truck. He looked at me & chuckled & said your probably right. As it turned out I did my own shopping around for the motor & transmission & had them replaced the radiator too. With labor it cost $4000 but I couldn't find a truck positively in this shape for the same price.

From what I saw on the Grizzly website, the new G0733 has a new motor. It is a silver case and the shape is round............where on the G0698 the case was black and a bit square in shape.

I wonder what the difference is ..........I wonder if they put a stronger motor in it...........both are rated at 2 hp, ........just thinking out loud?!

it definately is an up grade...looks similar to the motor that is on the jet. I think the main upgrade is that it would be fan cooled. Hopefully they put a better inverter than the older model. They still didn't add a hand wheel?

It is funny on the new catalog, they reference "made in Tiawan". I guess it is better than china.

It still only has a one year warranty...i think? How easy is it going to be to get parts for it if it does break. If my lathe broke, i would have parts shipped to my door in two days(jet)

Where did you read this? I couldn't find it.

It is mainly an assumption on the fan...You can see it a little from the pictures. The black shroud...at least on my jet is a cover for the fan. It is good to see that they have cooling fins on it too. It is funny, they have a 16/42 which showcases in one of the pictures that they have a delta inverter. That lathe looks exactly like my Jet...with the exception of the green paint. It looks like the later model that jet had with the pivoting head.

Having had an 18/47 Laguna and going to the Jet, I didn't notice much of a difference as far as using the extra swing. The overall performance, quality build, service(haven't had to use it yet), plus a 5 year warranty. I think it is worth the extra money. The lathes in this class really aren't heavy enough to turn something heavy over 16 inches, just by the design of the bed. Look at the powermatic bed in comparison, how much thicker it is. I turned a 17 inch bowl on the laguna, and it was tough with the deflection especially that it is 5 inches larger than the jet. It snubbed out multiple times, I have yet to snub out the Jet with turning 21 inch bowl off of the end. Hopefully the new ones with the new motor will be better
