Well I had a friend cut down a tree and gave me all I wanted of it. He had it on the ground and the brush gone when I made it there. All I had to do was pick what I wanted and he helped load it with the tractor loader bucket. Now I don't know how much easier it can get.
There is still a 10' straight trunk that is 17" at the top to get next week when I get time. This wll keep me turning for awhile I think.

Congrats on your haul Walnut is a beautiful wood just make sure you protect your ways and any other cast iron the fresh cuttings come in contact with.

green walnut

Any of the green walnut with white sapwood I used for natural edged bowls would split in the white sapwood. The when it is sanded the cracks would be blackened from the bark. Still have sold them!!! Gretch

Bowls

I have found when turning natural edge bowls that you need to get the bowl uniform thickness on the sides and the bottom. If there is a difference in the thickness they seem to have more of a tendency to crack. I just use the finger feeling method for thickness, I don't use any guage or calipers to measure with. It is amazing how close you can feel thickness with your fingers.

Drying

I just let it sit like it is now. The other walnut I have on hand was cut a few months back. It will split from the ends in maybe 2-3" but when you have a 3-4' log that is not much loss I figure. I have never used anything like wax or ancorseal. I rough turn bowls and use the soap method to soak them then let them dry. Or I just turn complete and let them dry and warp. This method may give 5-10% cracks at the most. But I have so many I don't consider that a very big loss either. Guess it all depends on how you look at things.

Rick great haul. Looks like some nice turning especially the crotches. As was said make sure you protect your ways. Walnut stains it pretty bad.
