Foggy Face Shield

I'd like to wear a face shield when I turn, but I can't keep it from fogging up. In the summer, it's pretty bad, and in the winter, it's just impossible. Any suggestions? I've used an anti-fog cleaner ("rain" something-or-other), but without much success. Also, I once saw a face shield that had a mesh screen for the bottom half, which was supposed to allow your breathe to pass through without fogging the top half of the shield. Have any of you used such a shield; does it work, and where can you get one? Thanks.

The rain-x doesn't work. I have 2/3 of a bottle left. Didn't work on my car either. I use used dryer sheets. The new ones are stiff enough they might scratch the shield but the used ones are soft enough not to scratch and will keep the face shield from fogging.

Fogging

I have had good luck with NOVUS 1 . You can get it at a motocycle shop. It's made to clean and anti-fog plastic. HalseyR

After seeing a class assistant at Arrowmont with a bubble front face shield from Craft Supply, I bought one, had it a few years and scratched the inside. The Novus product was used to remove the scratch, which it did easily. Unfortunately it had an anti-fog coating on it and the Novus made a mess of it, I know dumb move. A new bubble lens was purchased and now only rinsed with warm water and dried with a soft cloth and used dryer sheets when cleaning is necessary. The anti-fog coating is still working quite well. The same routine is used to clean my Triton when it needs cleaning.

Ruth is right. I had given up on face shields. If I found one that was comfortable, it fogged up. I was at Bruce Hoover's shop this morning and he had me try on one of the ones he carries at the Sanding Glove. Extremely comfortable so I bought one. Wore it all afternoon and absolutely could NOT get the thing to fog up! LOL I came back in the house later and only and realized I still had the shield on when my dog barked at me. I love it. My Trend will probably sit on the shelf unless I feel I need air filtration and even then I will probably just wear a respirator or mask under the shield.

Hi Carole,

That is funny!! It must be comfortable too if you forgot you had it on. But those dogs will always keep you on the straight and narrow. 🙂 Sounds like a nice shield. I may pick one up myself.

See ya,
Dave

are you guys refferring to the uvex bionic shield at the sanding glove? It looks like it seals around your face, yet it doesnt fog? do any of you who have tried it wear glasses? I would be interested if it works over glasses

I wear glasses....

and have used it for about 1.5 years. It does not seal like a Trend, but does come down below your chin.

There is only one time that it fogged on me. There are 3 settings on it that allow you to vary the distance that the shield is from your nose/mouth. I gave it to someone to use, (a young kid), and the setting was readjusted for his head. When I put it back on, my nose was almost touching the shield, and when I exhaled, my mouth was so close that I 'fogged' a circle on the inside. Putting the settings back to their original placement solved the problem.

Yes, I wear safety glasses under mine. I think I can wear goggles under it if I want. It does not seal around your face and you can adjust how close it comes. I have seen these shields at greatly varying prices and finally figured out that the cheaper Bionics in the $25 range are NOT the ones with the HC/AF visors! The 8510 is the hard coat/anti-fog model. (The Sanding Glove only carries the 8510.) Be sure you get that model or you will be disappointed.

I have mine on the closest setting. I must have a pin head head because it still does not fog! LOL

Thanks

I'm going to order the face shield that Carole and Ruth have recommended. Thanks for all your advice.
