Just thought I'd share a photo of a beautiful piece of wood. As is usual the photo really doesn't show the chattoyance of the piece. I'm having a hard time trying to decide whether this becomes part of the family collection or whether it gets sold.

is that spalted big leaf maple? nice

Bigleaf would be an import to Owen Sound, which appears to be on the south end of Georgian Bay. Looks like fiddleback (curly) maple to me. Soft maple gets a bit darker as it spalts, so I would suppose hard maple?

Anyway, what you like is what you like. I like, and would put it on display in my house. Always the option of selling it when you get bored with it. Lots of things have gone that route here. One benefit to being the turner is that you get 'em first.

Thanks guys. It is spalted hard maple. A turner friend is in the process of clearing out his garage that has served as his wood storage area for years. His wife would like to be able to park a vehicle inside for a change! Anyway, this garage is packed with wood and as he culls his supply we make a deal for the wood. I've never been disappointed in what I've bought from him and the prices are more than reasonable.

This piece will grace our house for a while anyway and then we'll see what happens.

(where did spring go?????)

Way too good looking to sell right away! If you really want to show it off you could always take it with you and put a "sold" sing on it at a show.

I used to take pieces like that and put really high prices on them. I made my wife really loved and wanted, I stuck a really high price on it so no one would want it but I could show it off, about ten minutes after the show started some lady came and picked it up, took one look at the price, and whipped out the cash. I was excited, my wife was upset. I learned a lesson from that. 🙁
