I need some more antler, I've used up all of mine making pens. A local woman has some she'll sell, but I don't know what to offer per antler. And she wants me to set the price.
Any ideas?

dennis,
penn state industries sells it for $25.00 per pound, i usually try to get it from hunters in exchange for a pen or two. if you figure you can get 5 pens per pound and work out price from that.

I don't see how you could rely on 5 pens from a pound of whitetail antler. Most parts of the wild set of antlers is not usable for pens. Many parts are too curved and too small. I had a set that I could only get 4 pens out of the whole set of antler. I would suggest not paying a per pound price for full sets of antlers. The ones commercially for sale are larger and more parts of the purchased antler is suitable. Just a run of the mill antler set would not make as many pens.

I would think to look at the antlers and visualize how many blanks you could get and make your offer based on that. You would have to come up with what you would pay for a blank and do the calculations.

In my opinion that would be the way to go in order to be fair to both parties.
Tim.

First, check with your wildlife agency about buying and selling deer antlers. Some states have strict laws regarding buying/selling such items. I ran into this when selling antler light fixtures here in Tennessee.

Lady just got popped in Chesterfield County, VA for trying to sell an old deer head mount on Craigslist. I believe she was quite innocent about the whole thing, but they still cuffed and stuffed her....................... It reeked of entrapment, but I ain't a lawyer.................

Call before you sell.

That happens! Not nessessarily entrapment but most people don't think to check on the legality of something like that. I am told the IRS lurks on rodbuilding forums to see who is building fishing rods and not paying the necessary taxes. The builder is supposed to pay even if the rod is a gift. Been building for 5 years. Turning my own grips and reel seats now.
With chronic wasting disease in some deer herds, the game folks are careful about what crosses state lines or even county lines.

Did whomever told you this say what kind of taxes they were talking about? It beats me what they could be if you are not selling the rods.

Update on the lady from Chesterfield County, VA that got popped for attempting to sell a mounted deer head: I understand it got thrown out of court, but the Commonwealth kept the deer...............To me, this is a case of where education in lieu of enforcement would have been a lot better for everyone involved.

Anyone who builds fishing rods is required to file Form 720 to the IRS. The federal law requires the excise tax under the Wallop-Breaux Act. The tax is 10% of the selling price/value or a maximum of $10.
If the IRS came to your door, you would be required to show where each rod went, its value, and proof of the tax being paid. I have a file full of the copies of the 720 and purchase orders to my suppliers, showing what I have purchased. I can also tell where each rod went- gift, donation, or sale.
I don't think the person who builds a rod or two for family gifts will have to worry but there are those who build and bypass the system. Woe unto them! Keep in mind that I also have a state tax certificate to collect sales tax on sales in Tennessee along with a website. It would be easy to find me.

I just talked with an antler artist who gets antler material from all over the country, as well as internationally. He says he has no problem buying and selling antlers from anywhere, but Wyoming Fish and Game has to put a red tag on antlers from there. Curious that he has no problem and other folks have.
