I have been turning vases with small necks and need some advise on extending my sanding discs from my drill. My three in mandrel has a round shank, like a drill bit and my 2 inch has a hex head mandrel. I need help finding a fix for both. A six inch extention would do fine. Thanks

Sanding Solutions

Bruce Hoover, at "The Sanding Glove", has just about every concievable solution for sanding woodturned objects. Bruce is a very good turner and has a great understanding of woodturner's sanding needs.

Bruce can be reached at: 757-665-4597. He has a printed and an on-line catalog. His web site is: www.thesandingglove.com. If that's not correct, just give him a call and talk to him about your problem. He also advertises in the AAW Journal.

If your hex shank is 1/4" across the flats, an Irwin Speedbor extension might hold it. Six-inch provides an actual extension of 5 1/8" after snap engagement, and they can be piggy-backed. I think there's a 12-inch available, too. Examine at Lowe's or Home Depot, with your mandrel in hand.

For round, or other sizes, consider a bit extension with setscrews. The barrel will likely be much smaller than the 2-inch hole you need for access.

Standard drill extensions work great

and at slow speed I use my hand as a sleeve bearing to steady and control the sanding. Never gets hot nor does it feel unsafe. I have made up custom shapes with hot glued velcro on sleeping bag pad foam hot glued to small Roloc discs on their standard adapter. The extensions are much better on natural edge bowls as well as it is easier to control the placement of the sanding disc, and the drill doesn't bang into the bark.

I bought an extension that fits the larger hex shank from Packard. They have a 3 1/2" and a 6" size. Set screws. They also sell extensions for the smaller 1/4" shafts, however I got the smaller length and then piggyback it with a generic spade bit extension I got at the big box (the shaft on the Packard extension fits). This costs less and allows some flexibility w/ length.

Hi Gary.....

Don't know if this will help you, or not......but, I've purchased some drill bit extensions from my local hardware store to extend my sanding disc mandrels. There are two of these in this photo. The sanding disc mandrels are secured with a couple of set-screws. I believe they are available for different sized shanks, but these are for 1/4" shanks.

Later, friend......
