This is probably the best solution if you already have a magnetic base or would like one and can kill 2 birds with one stone.
Of course, you'll want to make sure that it offers the length of overhang you need.
Well it isn't cheap but it is excellent. I have a homemade one that I have never been happy with. I'm saving my bucks for this one. It is extremely well made and solid. http://www.monster-wood-tool.com/wst_page7.html
I have marveled at the machining on that for awhile. Liiks real well made and thought out. And one of the few designs I would say it is easier to buy than make.
Steve He also puts an aperture below the lazar to make the dot smaller. I don't think it tells you that in his literature. I discussed it with him at Indyfest and it is one sweet tool.
It just occurred to me that you might not know about the system made by/for Elbo Tool. At $22 for the frame, it is hard to beat. The laser is another $22. This is what I have and it works well. I don't know if it is a combination of poor quality & dumb luck or intended that way, but my laser puts out a nice little line segment about 1/4" long. I like this because I angle it to reflect the angle of the base wall of my HF.
