Basically, it is cut in half and glue back together in different orientation as are many of Stephen Hogbin's pieces.
The "process" is described in his book, Hogbin on Woodturning. You can also search back issues of American Woodturner. I believe that there was an article a few years ago on the walking bowl.
Regester published a description of his process for turning trunnion boxes in Woodturning #8 (May/June 1992), and that was reprinted in Spindle Turning (The Best from Woodturning Magazine)
