I am Don Lewis, a retired geologist, and currently a wood turner living in Montgomery, Texas and a member of the College Station based Brazos Valley Turners wood turners club. I have been turning since 2002 but only seriously since retirement in 2019. I enjoy turning bowls from anything from firewood to exotic blanks. Segmented turning probably gives me the most satisfaction, however, I also enjoy making faux basketry illusion pieces, resin castings and surface embellishing . Combining pyrography with basket illusion allowed me to walk away with Best-In-Show at this year’s (2024) National Black Bear Festival’s fine art show, in Plymouth, North Carolina (pictured below).

Here are a few pieces that I have worked on over the last couple of years.

Hello Don! Nice stuff! I'm sure you'll find lots of people here interested in and inspired by what you do.

Hey, one of my best friends is a retired geologist! It's hard to go anywhere with her without "Hey, stop here!" so she can climb up some slope and look at the rocks! She is also an expert with llamas and handles a lot of the health and breeding of mine. Geologists are good solid, well-grounded people! :)
