Sorry for the blank thread everyone. I'm going to pass on this one.

I don't know if it is the same one as you were thinking about, but five or six years ago, Delta came out with a new variable speed lathe that looked pretty nice. I think that it might have had a 16 inch swing. I intended to buy it and they let me do a thorough evaluation on all the mechanical aspects at the local Rockler store. There was something that kept bothering me about the way things seemed to shift around on alignment such as the headstock and tailstock centers until I finally noticed that the ways on the bed were moving. It was then that I finally noticed that the ways weren't welded directly to the frame, but instead it used U shaped tabs of sheet metal that connected the ways to the structure. One end of the U was tack welded to the frame and the other end was tack welded to the bottom of one of the ways. The best I remember the two ways were at least somewhat independent of each other, but the main concern was that the ways were more or less floating on this non-rigid connection. Whenever the headstock or tailstock was locked down, I saw a very significant flexure in the ways vertically and torsionally. This particular model was not on the market for very long -- maybe just a few months.
Bill,
Sounds like this puppy. It is purty but I'm shy of it. I had a little windfall and was thinking toy but then I woke up and remembered that 150' of cable I need to buy and a few things including some chainsaw safety gear. I do need a hand spec'ing out that wire now please. Time to start that project when the ground thaws, a statement you won't hear often from South Louisiana!
