Delta 46-460 spindle

I know 1800tool part gets things direct from delta but dont know about the others thanks.i guess I need to use google more often.charlie it sounds like I need to order a switch too.
Just found out m&d don't stock either.

Switches, reverse switches, and speed controls are all on the list of items that fail on that lathe with no parts support from Delta. Amazon actually stopped selling them for a while. I think that happened when they had lots of shipping damage and broken switches from the shipping. It sounded like they had some switches in stock recently, but for at least a year, you couldn't get ANY parts for that lathe. Service centers couldn't get parts either. It took them 10 months to get my rebate to me when I bought it. I finally left some comments on their Facebook page about not mailing out rebates, and I had it within the month. I wouldn't touch any Delta tools with a 10' pole, after buying that lathe. It's the best thing that ever happened to Jet.

I have two 46-460s, my club has four and various members have at least six more. Not one problem with these lathes and we've had them since they came out. Now the Oneway 1224 that only gets used on a rare monthly basis has had more problems than a barrel of monkeys.

I started looking into the delta problems with no support and it was amazing how many people have machines they can't get parts for.
I may just sale this lathe while I can.

Hi Scott:

Just a few suggestions:

It may be easier (and perhaps even cheaper) to remove the spindle and take it to a local metalworking or machine shop to see if they can straighten it than trying to get a replacement part. I continue to hear not so good things about service and replacement parts from Delta. (If you can't locate a metalworking shop, you might try an automotive engine shop who rebuilds engines and works with crankshafts, etc. .)

Are you sure it is the spindle out of true, or could it be that the bearings have been torqued out of alignment (maybe by some previous user getting a very bad catch) or damaged in some way? To check the degree of distortion in the spindle, remove it from the headstock and roll it on a very flat surface (i.e. sheet of glass, milled machine top, etc.). It might be that you just need a new set of bearings replaced correctly? To me, it is just very surprising that a spindle on such a small lathe would be bent.

You could also keep an eye on sites like eBay for sellers parting-out lathes of the same model, although for such a recent lathe, that might take a very long time.

Good luck with the repair!

Rob

I visited a fellow woodturner today because he had a nice mesquite log that he wanted me to take off his hands.

He has the Delta lathe being discussed so I asked him about any problems that he has had and he said that his has performed perfectly since he bought it (he bought it when they first came out several years ago). Several other club members also have that model lathe and I have never heard a discouraging word from any of them.

Did I mention that this mesquite log was too heavy to load onto my truck without ruining my back permanently? Fortunately my friend has a tractor with a front end loader. 🙂 Now, I am a happy camper except that the log is still in the back of my truck. Next step is to get it from the truck to the lathe. I'm having visions of a four foot tall vase. 😀

We now return control from the wood gloat back to the bent spindle problem. Bent spindles can happen. It was probably bent from the beginning. My old Delta 1440 Iron Bed lathe had a bent spindle. That was back in the good old days when they were a part of Pentair and they sent me a new spindle plus bearings plus retainer clips.

I called the three places that were listed and two others no luck.

Scott:

Any idea what the machine shop would charge to turn a new spindle? The major problem would be that the spindle thread end would need to be somewhat hardened. The actual spindle body itself should not be too complicated to turn, particularly for a good machinist; 1" x 8 tpi thread cutting would be a bit more challenging. You'd also need to drill it out for a MT-2 taper, and for the knock-out rod. If a new part gets to cost more than the lathe is worth, you might consider parting it out or selling it as a "fixer-upper" to get your investment back.... Hopefully it was a good price you got it for originally, so you can at least break even... 🙁

I've gotten into a few similar 'good deals' over the years, and fortunately haven't lost too much money along the way.

I hope you can get it fixed or sold....

Rob

I think I found a machinest that will make it at a reasonable price.the lathe is only 2 years old and still under warrenty but delta has no parts.i called delta today was on hold for over 1 hour and I hung up.

Scott, if/when you have starter issues, you can have an electrian use a light switch in place of the delta parts, works fine......i believe the brushes wear out in the delta part in just a short while

the delta supply/repair center told me just do not turn the machine off so much while moving the tool rest

I've had mine for a few years with no switch problem, however the reverse switch gets funky. Blow it out with air and it seems fine. Your bent spindle probably was bad from the factory, unless the previous owner beat it with a large hammer. There have been times when I have wanted to do just that!

I found a yong machinists with 16years experience that will turn it very cheap he does it on the side.he can make a lot of things so if any one needs anything turned or milled let me know I will give you his email.

Ask him if he will do J-section pulleys in aluminum.

i deleted my posts, the thread was about a spindle, i added negative comments about delta that were not called for, i am sorry that delta moved offshore and jobs that were lost, i am sorry if i violated the spirit of the forum

It's OK, Charlie, most of their machines were either partially or fully made offshore for at least the last twenty years. Before being made in Pacific rim countries, much of the machinery was made in South America. They are still headquartered in the USA -- Anderson, SC. They say that the Unisaw is made here, but it is actually just assembled here. Most of the parts are from Taiwan and other countries.

I wouldn't blame Delta for all of this. If anybody is to blame, then one of our good old US companies, Black & Decker would be one of the "usual suspects" if I can borrow a term from Casablanca.

It is disappointing that delta does not have service parts for machines that are still under warranty,if the spindle does not work out I will part it out and get more than what I paid for it.
Then go get a jet I have had good luck with them.

When I bought my Delta lathe a number of years ago, they told me that I could get a full refund anytime during the warranty period if I wished. I don't know if that is still their policy, but if it is in warranty and they can't provide the necessary parts, I would ask about that as an option. They have changed owners twice since I bought my lathe so I don't know if that offer is still available.

Just an update I got new spindle from machinest and works great.
If anyone needs anything made out of steel, alliumnum, plastic just pm me and I give you his contact info if this is allowed if not I will delete this.
Also he was cheap really cheap

No, don't delete it -- this is a very useful kind of post because it is part of problem solving and is not considered advertising.
