Delta 14" Iron Bed Lathe (36-715) Review

Excellent review, Thank you.

I am in the market for a new (first) lathe and this info is quite useful. It looks like I could save about $200 (and I'm not rich by any means).

Thanks again

Austin

Delta Lathe

Not in agreement with the posted review. I turned my 14" back in after a month. Excessive vibration in the headstock which Delta did not sucessfully repair. Traded up to the 16" ironbed and have been quite satisfied.

Maybe a case of you get what you pay for. I would stongly suggest you to two things. First, do a web search for additional comments on this lathe and secondly, if you do deceide to purchase the lathe, make sure that you can return it without hassle or expense.

Happy turning

As much as I'd like to see everyone pleased with every machine, I know that is not going to happen.
Since posting the review of the Delta 14" Iron Bed lathe, I have received 20-some positive comments from current owners and one negative, citing vibration problems mainly from a while ago.
So far, the ayes have it in a big way.

I had bad luck

The problem with any tool review is that they are by necessity never based on a large enough sample. You may get a better than typical lathe to evaluate or on the other hand (like me) you may get one that just does not measure up. My 1440 had numerous problems-(vibration, vertical headstock/tailstock misalignment of over 1/16", a rattling headstock, tailstock that could not be adjusted to lock down securely, slop in the indexing mechanism, etc-etc..) I had good response from Delta in trying to correct the various problems but replacement drive pulleys, headstock and tailstock, indexing pin subassembly did nothing to help. After 3 or 4 months of frustration I finally took the lathe back to Woodcraft and VERY HAPPILY paid the additional amount needed to get a Jet 1442.

At the time I bought the Delta there were numerous negative comments on other turning forums but that was about a year and half ago so hopefully Delta has since corrected the problems that were apparantly common at that time.

With Delta it is the luck of the draw, so to speak.

In 03 I pugchased the Delta 16" ironbed. The head stock was wobbling so after some arguing I shipped the headstock back. They shipped a new headstock to me and sure enough the new headstock was out of whack also but not quite as bad. After a lot of arguing on the phone with the Dealer I shipped the whole lathe back and got my money back. Although it cost me money for shipping etc. and three months without a lathe I was glad to get rid of the Delta. I than purchased a Powermatic 3520 which is great.
Deltas quality control is that they sell you the machine and it doesnt work properly , send it back, and so on. However I had a 12" delta lathe prior to getting the 16" and it worked just fine. I have lots of other Delta and Porter Cable tools and they are fine also. Another problem was that I had left messages with the Delta Rep in this region but never did hear from him. Also, I bought the 16" lathe from a dealer in another province which made things even more difficult.
Regards,
Norm
