creating a website

I'm looking at GoDaddy for my business; have my domain name with them. I was told by a website designer/manager that the ones that offer free websites aren't secure and could allow anyone to access your website. Just what I was told.

You can also try 1and1.com. I have been with them since they started. I have set up several commerical sites including my own site and blog and helped several folks with setting up their "template" sites and my customers have been and are, very happy. For a good business site it's about $10/mo you can get it cheaper, but this price will give you all the whistles and bells you will need and room to grow.

website

I use Go Daddy for hosting and do the creation on a Mac using iWeb. A bit restrictive in what you can do but it's rather easy to navigate, there are a number of nice templates and the basics are there. I'd rather work in the shop than on the computer and this is pretty simple for me.

I would stay away from 1and1.com, they are crap in my book.

godaddy is good for hosting, best thing though is that you can in stall the wordpress templetes with them, which will give you access to tons of differnt templetes.

Templates

James, thank you for the comment on the templates. I might be sending a PM later for your help.

I have used GoDaddy for about 10 yrs now and have always been pleased. they have a lot of prepackaged stuff and their tech support is unrivaled as far as i am concerned. I have never ahd a problem with email svcs and Danica used to smile at you when you logged in.😀

Other providers have not compared to theirs.

I'm willing to help out.
when I was involved with internet marketing I didn't do much of the website set up, but I"m familiar with much of it.

here is a couple of links from godaddy that will give you an idea of how to start. If you have any other questions let me know. Btw. I used to code websites and will help, just don't have a bunch of time. Also I know a lot about SEO (search engine optimization - which is how the search engine find and rank your page...)

Great explaination James, I feel the same about GoDaddy, templates are lousy and support is worse. Oh and most providers including 1and1 support wordpress, installation is very easy, even without a wizard. I can access mine from my android phone, ipad and pc. I'm currently a web coordinator for a major healthcare provider and while we have our own servers, I would say a third of our techs use 1and1 for their own sites. Go Daddy does have a cute NASCAR though.

I've been building and maintaining web sites for about 16 years, and do online marketing for my day job. One of the greatest developments for small businesses is the availability of hosted blogging and content management systems. For my money the best out there now is squarespace.com. I have no affiliation, but I did get a chance to use the system when setting up a cub scout pack site. Start with a template, add modules, change colors etc. Very user friendly. If you need a free site try Google Sites. More limited but it's free.
