i turned a hf from spalted maple, groved it( i would not call it a spiral) and bleached it.... a crack that i had CA'ed while turning opened up again after the bleaching process

any suggestions ... only thing i could think of was doublemint and baby powder, but when i put the poly on it i think i would lose the baby powder 😱

Doublemint and Baby powder? I had to fix a crack once that had appeared after finishing. I put a little Claphams Salad Bowl Finish around the crack so the CA wouldn't stick to the wood anywhere except in the crack.

Charlie,

If I'm reading your question correctly (not a safe assumption), you've a crack in your bleached maple hollow form. Since maple tends to be fairly light in color, I'm assuming your hollow form is all-but-white after the bleaching. In that case, I'd suggest you use a clear/amber 5 minute epoxy to fill the crack. Mix some of it up and see if you like the color after it cures. If not, you can mix the epoxy with tints to get a fair match in color with your hollow form. Or, you could feature the crack by filling it with a contrasting material like turquoise or coral. Given that the hollow form is off the lathe, you might not be able to turn your patch flush, but given that you've done some embellishing, I assume you've the ability to "carve" and sand the patched area so it matches (or compliments) the rest of the piece.

Hope this helps.

yes, that's the problem, i will not be off till thursday, so it will be a couple days before i try to fix it 😀 i do have some gray and tan areas where the spalted sections did not go all white i was hoping to only have the black line left, the black line is sort dark gray line now, 1st time to bleach maple or for that matter 1st time to bleach anything but box elder

i do like the white groves, i just wish i had done a better job ot that. 1st time for that also i don't think that i worrying John Jordan or Avelino Samuel yet 😀

I think it's all but impossible to match the surrounding wood with filler, in flatwork or round, especially with the variations at hand. Better to accentuate it with a contrasting color, and declare a design feature.

cracked

the crack has closed up somewhat this morning (thursday), since this is not the focus side of the hf, i am going to leave well enough alone and coat if with poly

i turned the outside and took it to show dad, and left it overnight before hollowing the next day, i would have been ok if i had put it in a box with dry shavings

the maple had a 35% moisture content and is turned to about 3/8 :cool2:
