Congrats Mike - I'll work with you to get a woodturning bio writeup.

I have closed the voting thread, but it is still viewable, as are the results.

We'll open a new contest soon. I'm open to any suggestions on improvements which can be made to the contest process and procedures. Please feel free to post suggestions on the forum, which can elicit discussion. Or they can be sent directly to me (jjilg@sbcglobal.net).

Good job Mike!

Congratulations to all the entrants. I liked all of the entries, it was difficult to pick one. It came down to a very subjective choice for me. Everyone of the entries showed the array of creativity assembled in this group. 😀

Kudos to all of the entrants...

It would be interesting to count the people-hours that were expended by the entrants getting their turnings ready for this contest. You have all done a superlative job which your wonderful combination of art and turning skills clearly demonstrates. Special regards to Mike for producing the winning design!

Thank you everybody. Allen, I didn't prepare this one specfically for this contest, but had finished it up the week or so before it was announced. This was an unbelievably time consuming work for me because of the gloss lacquer finish. The turning took no more time than one would expect, but the application of the red (Createx translucent red airbrush paint) and the 15 or so coats of lacquer, rubbed to flat every 4th or 5th coat, took an enormous amount of time. Then, sanding and polishing the surface took me many several hour sessions, and it still isn't as good as it should be on the backside. If I had it to do over again, I would have filled in the bark depressions/voids with clear epoxy so the final finish would have been optically flat everywhere, but this way you can feel/see the wood's natural properties where they occur.
