Removing Cocobolo rust staining ???

Can anyone give advice on if and how the rust staining that is sometimes found in older cocobolo blanks and lumber can be removed? I have just turned a 10 x 4 bowl that is covered in rust colored stain. I have found this type staining usually is limited to the first 1/4 inch of thickness but this one is stained all the way through. The natural various shades of purple are ruined by this staining. I tried a bathroom tile stain remover to no avail.

Good luck

I'v found nothing that will remove said stain. You can try bleach but I'd almost guarantee you won't like the result=fire fodder.

Fred,

I have used a solution Oxalic Acid to succesfully remove rust stains from textile substates. I do not know if it would work in this case but would definitely give it a try before burning a good piece of Cocobola.

Am I right in guessing that the "rust stains" are the oxidation color changes? Here and I thought that that's the color cocobolo is supposed to be.

Personally, I find it an attractive color and it is part of the pieces I turn with cocobolo. If you want to get rid of it and it's oxidation, I'm guessing that muratic acid (swiming pool and lime cleaner) would do it. You can suspend the wood over the acid in a closed container and it will nicely deoxidize it.
