Aloha, everyone
I am wondering if any other club besides ours, does a show that is on for at
least 2 weeks and open to the public.
The BIWT now has its 7th annual show going on which lasts the whole month of
March. It is held at the Wailoa Visitors Center in Hilo Hawaii and is
open, free of charge, to the public 6 days a week. It is a show put on by our
members, for our members, and at no charge to anyone. We have an exhibit of
170 pieces by 46 members, aged from 12 to over 70. There is also an
educational exhibit in a smaller room with the theme of "How Did THey Do
That?" We also have live demonstrations on the second and fourth Saturdays
and a live critique on the third Saturday. The purpose of this show is to
show the public what we can/are doing, expose more people to woodturning,
and open a venue for sales to the public and galleries throughout the state
by inviting buyers to our opening reception and to "meet the artist".
Now that I have blown our horn, are there any other clubs doing anything
similar? Details, please.

No, we don't anything even similar. But it does sound like a great idea! I could make excuses why it wouldn't work for us (no space, not enough members, etc.) but the bottom line is that YOUR club put in the effort to make it work and you should be commended. I will discuss this at our next meeting! Wish I could afford a trip right now, just to see your show.

Do you have a club website? I would love to see some photos from the show.

We don't do a seperate show but we have a booth at the Topsfield Fair and Marshfield fair, which totals out to about 20 days in all. (Massachusetts, by the way).

Shepparton Show Australia

Last weekend we attended one of our club shows. This was a 2 day show with a differance. One third of the hall had your static displays of items made by club members, the other two thirds was filled with demonstrations. In all there was 43 demonstrations from woodturning, carving, folk art, pyrography, scrollsawing, french polishing and much more. These were demonstrations put on by the club members all who donated their own time and machinery for the event. Those that were not demonstrating were helping in other ways such as selling raffle tickets general housekeeping and sales of any items sold and any other jobs that had to be done over the weekend.

This club has a membership of 110 and they also involved a couple of the smaller clubs to demonstrate. This was a great weekend for everyone concerned as there was activities for everyone male and female young and old. They were all happy to pass on any information they could to anyone who wanted to listen.

It was good to see a club put so much effort into an event now in its 15th year and all the members all so willing to help. Congratulations have to go to the organising committe for a job well done.

Ray, It wouldn't be possible to post photos other then my own, but I am working on a cd photo album of the show. Yesterday, I took close to 300 dig. pics and am editing them now to put onto a cd album for our members to purchase. I might be able to send one your way,if you are interested in purchasing it when it's done.
Aloha,
Doug

Club shows are great!

The chesapeake woodturners in MD have a member gallery show about once a year since about 1995. The club has found it to be a very positive experience.
Each show generates publicity for woodturning, new club member, and reasonable sales.

These shows are inclusive! Each member who participate will get at least one piece in the show.

Each club member can submit up to five pieces. The club invites a juror from the art community(art proffessor, visiting turner, gallery owner, recognized collector etc.) The juror is asked to select a show that include at least 1 piece from each participating member and a total show of no more than 50-80 pieces. The show size is a predetermined number base upon the gallery space. The juror is also asked to select one or more Juror's Choice pieces. This results in show of usually about 50-60 peices with from 3-5 jurors choice awards.

This inclusive format is of great benifit to the less accomplished turners in that it gives them a chance to have their work displayed. It does of course put an occassional substandard piece in the show, however the overall quality of the show is not adversly affected by this practice. The public and the newer turners sublty become appreciative of the works that earned juror's choice awards and the work of those turners who have 4-5 pices in the show.

Recently the club has had to book some galleries 2 years in advance. The gallery fees usually run $100 for a 4 to 6 week show. Often the shows will run with a 2 dimensional art show such as water colors. one show ran with a quilting exhibiton and it was a terrific background to the turnings. Also the galleries now ask the club to do a show when they are putting together their calendar.

Happy Turning,
Al

Jim, that event surely requires a lot of manpower, 43 demos at once requires a lot of manpower and equipment. Cangratulations. I like that idea, and if you don't mind, I will bring it to the attention of our board at the next meeting. It might be somethain that we might also like to do. Presently, we do something somewhat like the "Emma Lake" event that I believe is held in Canada. We are always looking for more ideas to increase participation, comraderie, and public interest and also might attract some youth participation. Aloha to all who have posted. Any more?
