How bout it AAW folks?

I find it much easier to look at a map of Georgia and find where the clubs and members are, than to look through the directory, looking one name at a time.

How about making an interactive map, or even posting a static map of clubs?

I thought that a map would have been a good idea at the AAW booth at the Atlanta Woodworking show, but only thought of it after I got there...

Jeff,

Thank you for pointing that out, but, I have not only been aware of it, but have pointed it out to quite a few other folks as well. I'm appreciative of the resource directory (I use it quite a lot!) and the online club directory as well.

I'm planting a suggestion, that I hope will germinate.... :cool2:

My point is that there are so many clubs in some states that it's hard to keep track of where the closest ones are.

For instance, in GA we now have 11 clubs. If someone asks where the closest AAW club is, I can't really tell them because I have no idea where half of the towns they meet in are....

Like Fortson, GA. How would I know where it is, unless I looked up the town on the map? And then I'd have to do that for each of the clubs I wanted to look up.

Much easier to just look at one map.... 🙂

Mapquest?

Would it be possible to use Mapquest's technology and have it attached to the AAW website?

frappr

"Friends mapper"--many groups use this site. I think Woodcentral has one.
I just started one for the AAW chapters, check it out at:

If this seems like a good idea to a lot of people, hopefully a rep from each chapter can add their club to this map and volunteers can fill in the gaps (raises hand). This is done by using the Add Place link.

Map of Clubs

There are some nice API's for a Google Interface and an Interactive Map.

http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/

An example using Episcopal Churches on Cape Cod.

stbarnabasfalmouth.org/Downloads/9_Maps/DeaneryMap.html

Click on the Google Spot. You get a pop up with Info. Instead of the address, a club contact might be appropriate. Or Click on the name on the side. You get the popup.

So you could pick a club by map location or club name and location.

club locations

Maybe a dumb question, but, if someone looked up the state they lived in with the list of clubs they should be able to tell which city a club was in that was closest to them, shouldnt they?

That's true,

But if I'm trying to tell someone where the closest club is to them, I'm not usually sure. It would be easier for me to look at a map, than to look up each address to see where it was.

Jeff,
Did you get PM i sent you about the web site that I belong to that shows where all the members & clubs are across the US. It even posts your Pic. 😀

If not let me know & You can look at it yourself to see if it something for the AAW to use. The best part is IT"S FREE 😀

I am not trying to sell anything to anybody. I just joined our local AAW club.
Ocean Sate Wood turners (Rhode Island) & due to the subject of this post. I thought I would post what we use.

This has been a pretty productive thread and this is a good suggestion. I have asked Ed Davidson to evaluate the suggestions. Some were sent via email and some via PM.

I'm not sure this is a project where we want to invest 50 hours. But maybe a simple front-end to the Google maps will be productive. I would ask that people feel free to contact Ed directly. We received one real good Perl front end today that is simple to modify and might just be "it" !
