Chucks

I don't know what you mean by step chucks. There are chucks that have step jaws. I like Vicmarc chucks and usually buy them from Craft Supplies.

Just noticed they have a sale on step jaws.

I think that sale is on Nova jaws

That being said, I have a set.... only jaw-set I never use (that's a hint I guess)

I have a set of step jaws and only used them a few times. This is a case to me where the different sets work a lot better than the combined set. I found access to the bottoms difficult to access, and the only really usable one was the largest step.

I purchased a set of Vicmarc step jaws thinking they would fill in some places where the other jaws might miss. Or at least to put them on and not remove them. I have yet to use them. I don't often buy things that I don't use but so far this has been the case. Maybe if I just install them on a chuck I might find a use for them.

step jaws

Hi Douglas,
Vicmarc...the only step jaws that I ever use and probably will ever use. I have both sets permanently mounted..one set on a vm 100 and, a larger set on a 120. Richard designed them for Vicmarc (or vertech) years ago. If you cut your tenon correctly, those jaws are un-broken and, will leave you with and an undented base allowing you to complete a bowl in only 2 fixings.
Another and perhaps more intriguing thought is, if you wish to use some of the "inner steps" of the step jaws, chances are that you have created a more interesting form for your bowl as, you must have enough clearance near the base of the bowl to properly reach the inner steps and achieve a solid and safe grip. It will immediately cure one from making "dumpy" bowls.
Best,
Jay
