I started turning 2 years ago when I bought my lathe I ordered a set of chisels from them $ 80.00 set of 8 made of high carbon steel. My next set was a $99.00 set on sale for $49.00 no name HSS. I am now in the market for a good set of chisels. I was looking at Lee Valley Tools for the Henry Taylor HSS for 379.00

Would you buy a set or should I be buy 1 at a time, Has anyone tried Henry Tayor and what other brand would you recomend

Don't by a set. Buy only what you need and get good ones. It's hard to go wrong with Sorby, Henry Taylor or Ashly Isles. I am a fan of the Thompson and Dway tools. They are a little more pricey but better steel. On the bargain side the P@N and Packard house brand tools are good.

+2 on what John said. You buy direct from the guys who make the tools, so you get better quality for less money. You can buy after market handles from both of them, or I prefer to make my own wood ones.

Which ones you buy depends a lot on what you turn. If you buy a set, generally you get a few tools that you will almost never use. Maybe figure out what to get first depending on which tools you use the most now.

In general, 2 bowl gouges, one more finger nail to swept back design, and one more blunt, often called bottom feeders for the inside of the bowl. One spindle roughing gouge, one detail/spindle gouge, one skew, one round nose scraper, one parting tool, and the list goes on from there for more specialized tools.
