I set my self on a mission to make 50 different boxes for an up coming show. Thought it would be a good time to try out my never used chatter tool. I'm getting a desent pattern but it is really really light. So here's my questions:

1. Burr or no burr? Bonnie kline in the video this organization sent me says no burr. The Sorby web site has a video on using their tool and it says you need a burr. I tried both ways and at the same speed and saw no difference...any opinions?

2. Whats the trick to getting a deeper pattern? I can get a wider or closer pattern by varing the speed and the amount the cutter hangs out from the tool but have not been able to get more than a very superficial pattern as far as depth of cut goes.

3. Any other thoughts or comments on how to use the tool would be appreciated as would links to any other tutorials other than the sorby videos.

Peace

I am no expert. I do know very Hardwood and end grain only for that type of tool.

As to depth, more pressure.

Good luck with your 50 boxes, I'll be watching the answers.

Justin I've tried burr or no burr I have decent success either way. Shorten the distance the tool hangs out of the holder and push in harder. I use the tool at about 7 o'clock tilted left or right. How far you hang the whole tool over the tool rest also changes the pattern. There are just too many variable in chatter tool usage. You simply have to try a lot of different ways and see what works.

This may sound very basic but are you using the tool rest? I have better luck holding the chatter tool free hand or at worst with my index finger between the tool and the rest. I'm not real comfortable with that index finger approach but I have used it.

Yes, I'm only trying to do chatter work on end grain of very hard woods.

When I use more pressure it makes a cut very simmilar to a scraper no chatter.

Jake are you serious about not using the tool rest? Your saying to just hold the tool over the bed and push it into the work?

Yes, with the speed down and a single sweep from center out. You can vary the sweep interrupt it(skip)or vary the pressure.
