the rough turned blank still weighs 4 lb 13 oz tonight about the heaviest i have ever turned its green

micheal, you talk of earth tones, well i started this spalted maple a while back and my sister was up this weekend and she wants this piece, i glued it back together where it broke into 4 pieces, its punky around the tenon, has big nature crack in side, she still likes it i had put it aside as hopeless i talked to terry mitchell and he said put some duck tape around it and go to it , i can not hurt it any more 😀 😀 😀

broke

it broke because i dug in cleaning up the bottom again, it was kind of spunky around the tenon, but it broke at the top plus it has that big crack in the middle, its been about a month since pieces went flying and i have calmed down somewhat, i talked to terry because i really liked the piece even if the dark brown i had chatter all around it and it was broke, then my sister came and said she liked it but i might just have to let her have it the way it is cause like you say that piece is just an accident waiting to happen even if it is pretty wood 😎 😎

It's not worth getting hurt. If you are even slightly worried that the wood is still unstable then don't do it. There are much better pieces of wood out there. I've turned a lot of pieces. It ain't worth it if you end up getting stitches or worse.

Jeff-no pain, no gain??? 😉 Gretch

Well unfortunately in the last 18 months I have read reports from at least 5 or 6 people who got hurt woodturning. So now that you got me going...

In one or two of those they were wearing a faceshield and it saved them from worse injury. The others were not wearing faceshields and the injuries were much worse. If a piece of wood is known to be bad or soft and the woodturner is not in the advanced category it's not worth it. Heck even in the advanced category often it is not worth it. There is just too much good solid wood available for us to turn.

Alright, I feel a little bit better now.
