A couple of years ago, in the member galleries, there was a photo of a set of candle sticks that looked like lily pads.

I can't seem to find it anymore - does anyone have a link?

Once again Malcom, you never cease to amaze. Looks like Birds-eye Maple, Cherry, and Padouk or did you just dye the edges?

The Candlesticks I had in question looked to be about 8" tall, very thin stock with a bulb at the top that held the actual candle. The base was round, perhaps 4-5" in diameter, and appeared to be turned & carved to resemble the leafy part of the lily pad.

But like I said, I can't seem to find it in the galleries anymore.

I had seen these before and have always admired them. Turned by Owen Lowe and taken off of the Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild web site (www.woodturningguild.com)

HEY! Dem's my sticks!

Made 2 pairs of them about 3 years ago - a Cocobolo pair and this African Blackwood pair. I'd like to make another pair but just haven't found the mental energy to tackle the job.

I admire them too.

Owen: Did you carve the incursion into the lily pad bases or did you simply cut a small wedge into the base and sand it down until it looks good? Also, on the top of the bulb, there appears to be something white. Is this a tea-lite candle or did you put something else here?

Yes, the "slit" in the lily pad is carved. They are mirror images of each other, with the curve and high side reflected - being of Blackwood it's difficult to see the effect. The top of the bulb is inset with a bone ring. The bulbs are designed to hold 12" drip-less beeswax candles.

The pair in the picture was a "gallery" pair I made for a local juried art show a few summers back. Here's a pic of them in the show with some of Cindy Drozda's and Kip Christensen's pieces.

I've since made tea lights with alabaster bulbs; those bases have an undulating carved edge effect. Will have to photograph them one of these days...
