Does anyone know anything about what to do about a cut that will not heal. I cut my finger while turning a piece of camfer, actually I was finish sanding the piece and touched the edge of the turning and friction burned a very slight cut on my finger. Its been three weeks and the cut still weeps a clear liquid. It is not infected though.

Any help with this would be helpful!!

Paul,

Non-healing wounds can be indicative of a number of things not necessarily related to the wood you were handling. See a doctor. Don't rely upon medical advice from the Internet.

Hope all's well.

Totally agree with Mark. Three weeks is way too long. Please go see a medical doctor.

My bet is that some stuff got embedded in the wound and your body is trying to expel it.

I also doubt that the problem has anything to do with the wood being camphor. I also suspect that it is infected even though you may not think so. Sounds like time to hoof it to a doctor to be on the safe side.

Call and make an appointment. It's likely the thing will have healed by then, given the normal wait, even though partial-thickness burns are stinkers, with their smooth wound edges and dermal damage. Ointments under bandages only prolong the heal time, and if it's in a flex location, it hardly gets a chance to cake over.

There are more than a couple of nasty things this can be a symptom of. You haven't mentioned if this is an isolated instance or a trend, but some of the reasons can kill you, so call!

Camphor oil, as you know is a topical disinfectant, which is why you might have a splinter with no festering in there, though three weeks should have taken all the action out of it.

Bad News

Paul,

Anyone in your family tree diabetic? You a few pounds over weight and between 40 and 60 years old? Non healing cuts are an early symptom. If you are just too stuburn to go to the doctor at least borrow a test kit from a diabetic you know (we are all over the place) and check yourself in the morning before breakfast. If your sugar is high, lay off the candy, cakes and sodas, exercise and loose some weight. Blindness and amputations are some side effects nonconforming diabetics face. Sorry to bring doom and gloom here but turning will be difficult blind and without your feet. I am watching a co-worker, 55 years old, who has ignored his blood sugar problem for a decade or more begin the 'end' this winter. Sadly it is great motivation to keep after my own troubles. Just see a doctor and heed his advice.
