Since I got my new computer with win7, I haven't been able to take pictures of my latest bowls. Also have new PhotoExplosion software. Seems as though I can't get a driver for the camera.....Canon S30. The disc that comes with the camera isn't rated for windows7, so I think that's the problem. Anyone know where I can get this driver? Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated.....thank you.

You might try looking for new drivers on the Cannon USA website. 7's been out long enough, there may be some there. You could also do what I do, and just take the memory card out & plug it into your computer to transfer the files. The card can be opened up just like a flash drive.

Can't view? Probably a RAW codec problem. The camera can be viewed as a simple storage device in Win7 rather than letting some intermediate software take control and download/view if you prefer. I don't care for the subdirectory scheme my software packages use, so I use windows explorer instead.

Thanks for the responses so far everybody...........😀

Headed for work right now, so no time to deal with this now.......

I'm such a dingbat with computers and cameras that it's embarrassing! 😱

Easiest thing to do is to take the memory card out and put it in a card reader, if they show up as anything other than a JPG file, such as a RAW file, you will need some software in between.

Semi-related rant. Got my new point and shoot this morning from the friendly FedEx folks. I would not have believed it, but it has a different shape on the other end of its USB than anything I have available. My phone/Ipod/Canon Camera/Panasonic camera/wife's phone .... Then there are the ones that fool you with standard USB on one end, seemingly normal mini on the other, but different internal pinouts!

Opens up just fine in Win7 as a USB storage device, OD.

USB solution

Micheal,

You can go to Radio Shack or the like and buy a USB cable kit that is a retractable cable with a whole lot of different ends that you can put on it. It fits anything I have encountered so far.

Odie Steve answered you correctly. I'm not even close to a computer person but that is the technique I use. You can probably set your camera to record something less than a raw file, such as JPG or Tiff. then you should be able to read it on your computer. go into the menu's and look.

Odie, when I had a Window machine, I used Irfanview software for my photos and I know a lot of Window users use this free program. That may solve your problem. I'm surprised that your older Canon isn't recognized by the new computer. Irfanview has been around for at least a decade.

I have never needed to load a driver for any camera as iPhoto has always been plug and play with the USB cable. It has been recommended not to load my Nikon software as it is buggy . . . they're an optical company and not a software company . . . . so I haven't. (I'm looking through the box and . . . . oh yeah, there is a CD in here still in the sealed wrapper.)

I see a firmware update for your camera that may be worth installing into the camera if that hasn't already been done.

Odie,
I would just get a card reader, your camera uses a CompactFlash chip any of the card readers will have this. Then use "My Computer" or "windows explorer" to view the pictures and import just like moving any file. I usually have a folder with all my Pictures in it and then sub folders for topics or dates. I use Photoshop and Lightroom to store and adjust my photos but there are many free or cheaper solutions. Besides Photoshop has a rather large learning curve which I personally think is a bit much for what most users want.

Odie,

Here are some suggestions:

There are no drivers that are required to download images from your camera, but you probably don't have the right software from your disk installed on your new PC. You can do as Steve suggests and simply put the memory card in a reader. That is the fastest way to download images although that does not automatically take care of file management.

You probably have an old version of ZoomBrowser on your CD-ROM. You will need to download a new version. Canon provides updates to their software if you have an older version already installed, but for those who have updated their OS to Windows 7 or bought a new PC with Windows 7 installed, they provide the full application software. During the installation, you will be prompted to put the CD-ROM containing the old version into the CD-ROM drive to verify that you have the software disk. Click on THIS LINK to get to the downloads for the Canon S30. Click on the dropdown menu and select Windows 7. Scroll down until you see ZB660INST_E.exe -- ZoomBrowser EX6.6.0b Application (make sure that it is not just the updater version). Later, if you wish, you can download and install ZoomBrowser EX6.6.0d updater, but there is no real reason to do so unless you are obsessive about having the latest version of software.

Also, The later versions of ZoomBrowser EX do not include EOS Utility or CameraWindow. You probably have CameraWindow on your CD-ROM, but if not, you can download it from the Canon web site.

Here is what Canon says about updating if you have Windows 7:

  • ZoomBrowser EX 6.6.0b Installer does not include EOS Utility and CameraWindow, the applications used for connecting cameras. When downloading images, please use a memory card reader, or install EOS Utility or CameraWindow from the CD-ROM bundled with the product (if you wish to connect your camera using a USB cable).
  • Users who purchased Windows 7 for the first time can use this updater to install the application. In this case, please have the CD-ROM (DIGITAL CAMERA Solution Disk) bundled with the products ready.

  1. Download and start this updater.
  2. Insert the CD-ROM (DIGITAL CAMERA Solution Disk) into the computer's drive.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If you have problems running older software on your Windows 7 machine, you can usually run them in emulation mode. If you are not familiar with that, you can find help at the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Verified by e-mail this morning - Panasonic (Lumix) - bundled software is 32-bit only. Not that they tell you that anywhere except in the error message when you try installing. Might be the same problem with the Canon software.

Windows 7 can be 32 or 64 bit. Verify by Control Panel >System - it will show if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit install
However, try this. Put the CD in, don't run the autorun installer. Open it in a Windows Explorer window, go to that drive, right click on the setup or install file and "Run as Administrator".
Some pre-Windows 7 software will just not run under Windows 7.
In this case, if you are dead set on running this program, you can download for free, Windows XP mode for Windows 7. It is a large download, but it does work.

Tried that trick before I hit the e-mail to Panasonic. Apparently the installer program runs up against the 64-bit business during the assessment phase and says "NO." Ran up against it with my printer when I tried to install after the system change (fresh HD), but Canon had kindly put a 64-bit or compatible on its web site.

In fairness, the error message said only that it might not work with my OS or SP, though the geeks said definitely not. Of course all other kinds of 32-bit run fine....

XP mode run as slow as the old MAC DOS emulator?

Never ran the MAC emulator, not a MAC person.
How fast will depend on memory, CPU and drive speed. For what I do on my laptop it runs fine, runs smokin fast on my desktop, but it is about the fastest thing on the planet for home use.

What program are you trying to run? Could make suggestions for replacement as if it you get one that runs in 64 bit, it will be faster than under an emulator.

As I said, it was the "comes with" software from Panasonic. I just wanted to see if it were worth anything. For me, apparently nothing.

Used to use Photoshop but it printed crappy unreliable color, so now I'm using Corel. Good printer engine, and the program is loaded with features, if a trifle unstable.

Just a moment to thank all of you for your help......I'm still struggling, but this is because I'm just not enlightened on how to navigate the pc like some of you are.........

OK.......I give up!

Even if I got this darned S30 camera to work, I'd still have all the color and depth of field problems I had before..........so.........

I've decided to do what our honorable (?) politicians do to solve problems.......throw more money at it! 😀 (Only difference is, I'm throwing my own money at the problem!)

......Just returned from Best Buy with a new Canon S95 camera! With two memory cards, soft case, and 1 year replacement Best Buy warranty, I'm now $460 poorer......but, hopefully all the issues with the new computer, along with those troublesome issues the S30 camera has had with photographing in macro, and color........ will now be resolved. 🙄

All is not so bad, though......because my older son just happens to be in need of a good digital camera! Ah ha! 😉 .......and for average use, family photos and such......this little S30 camera is really a great camera! His Birthday is about one month from now. (Actually, he was born on Dec 31st, but to spread out his gifts a little, we've always given him his BD gifts on June 1st of each year.)....the S30 Canon camera will be just a little added bonus gift.

Right now, I'm burned out on this camera fiddling temporarily, and I've got a nice figured Hickory platter out on the lathe that looks very promising.......so, it's off to the shop for awhile! 😀

Thanks to everyone for the help and support..........

OK, I know this sounds like a desperate thing to do, but when you get your new camera, read the manual. 😀

Otherwise, I can assure you that the color and DOF problems will still be there.

At least, you will have the latest Canon Digital Solutions Disk to install the software on your PC. I suggest using ZoomBrowser EX for organizing your photos. I think that Canon is still bundling Photoshop Elements with their P&S cameras and it is a far superior image editor compared to freeware and shareware like Irfanview and PhotoExplosion.
