I've been lurking too long... it's time to ask a question.

I want to get a larger bowl gouge, I have a 3/8" Sorby, but I want a 1/2" or maybe bigger.

Has anyone used Sheffield Leyland tools from woodworker specialties? If so, what do you think of them?

I bought my Supernova 2 chuck from him, it works great and it was a good deal.

Thanks, Great Forum by the way, I've learned a lot.

Beware the flute/cylinder reference problem. A half-inch gouge can mean a quarter inch flute, which isn't much of a step. My most used bowl pattern is the Taylor 3/4 cylinder, which has a half-inch flute.

Are you working against long overhangs on larger stock or are you bed-limited to a certain size blank, is what I'd ask. If bed-limited to 12-16" stock, the 3/4 - 1/2 will certainly reach most places. If you're going to try some monstrous stock, might want to consider a larger diameter, but there your limit is going to be the strength of your arm. Smaller flute with longer handle will do a lot of things that a heavier section would do.

Doug is right that Grizzley is the best place to but Sorby tools for price. They don't have everything but in the basic gouge line they have most of them.

Another good value in tools is the Artisan line from Crafts Supply which is really a Henry Taylor which wasn't shiny enough to be a Taylor.

I have both the Sorby and the Taylor 1/2 bowl gouge. The Sorby I have ground a little blunter than the Taylor. The Sorby is my platter gouge and early rougher while the Taylor goes deeper into a bowl. Taylor is longer than the Sorbey both in handle and blade. Love them both just use each a little different.
