I am planning on purchasing a coring system at the symposium. Anyone out there have experience with the various models available. I am leaning towards the McNaughton system but have heard of turners who were frustrated trying to use it. It is more expensive than other manufacturers but seems to be more flexible. My main interest is saving time when roughing bowls. Thanks for all your input.

I have the McNaughton "combo" set (large and medium, not the small) and like it very much. Had no trouble except stalled my spindle and had to tighten the belt. 😛

Do strongly suggest you pick up Mahoney's DVD. He's the reigning champ on the McNaughton tool. I saw a small portion of the video and it was very good.

http://www.fholder.com/Woodturning/coring.pdf is an article by Lynn Mangiameli.

That said, I own both the McNaughton and the Oneway, and the oneway is easier to use, but all you get is one of four arcs. The Mcnaughton is a bit more versatile in that regard, but I owuld read the article first.

I use the McNaughton small and medium sets on a Jet 1236. I'm happy with it. The smallest core I've finished was 2".

I've never used any other system so I can't really compare, but I've found the McNaughton easy to learn.

I have the full set of McNaughton on the PM3520, I have been very happy while working my way through the learning curve. i have trouble locking the banjo with the large set as i do not have room to put the banjo under the bowl. I would skip the small set if I could only have 2. I only use these if I have great wood then the small bowls are worth it, otherwise I use lots of small logs to heat the house and could use these. I agree with Mark, get the Mahoney video, really helps!
