i just found out i have some black gum available...has anyone turned any of this...i have turned sweet gum but not this black gum?

thanks for your comments...

I recently turned a natural edge piece that was dry. Very heavy pronounced grain and hard. It turned ok but its not the prettiest wood I have seen.

John I've only turned a little. the first was really neat with small black dots and short lines all over. it wasn't spalted it just had thens dots and turned out really cool. Then next batch I got was rather plain. Turned OK but I ended up adding surface decoration to all of them.

I recently got something described to me as black gum and it turned quite well. It smelled kinda bad but worked well. I roughed out a couple bowls with it. the heart wood is almost black when wet with variing colors of orange and purple mixed in. I don't know what it will look like when finished though but I believe that it has lots of promise.
