anybody know where i can get a replacement belt for a delta midi lathe? I'm in the katrina area & things are still hard to find here.

thanks.

I had to order mine directly from Delta. They were very nice on the phone, took my order, arrived in a few days, and were fairly cheap. If you do order one from them go ahead and order two, it's cheap insurance. Some people say they found replacments at industrial supply houses but all I got were funny looks when I showed them what I wanted. Could've saved and time and gas by just ordering over the phone to begin with.

How long did it take for your belts to break? Or are you just replacing because they are worn? I'm curious because I have a Midi, and just want to know what to expect. 🙂

I guessing that I turned several hundred hours on my midi and the belt never broke, but it did stretch a bit over that period. I was doing a lot of demo's and taking it with me at the time so I ordered some new belts just to have on hand. It stretched to the point that the adjustment on the motor was about to it's end so I knew it was about time to change belts. Looked several times at changing them but always decided to wait until next time I was in the shop. Before I got around to it I bought a bigger lathe and now the midi is a dedicated buffing station. Since I neve change speeds I don't think about the belt needing changing.

Unless you really hog it down it should last a long time.

Anybody have the phone number for Delta to order the belt?

Then the next question is: How much of a project is it to change the belt? I had a Delta Midi lathe deposited in my shop and left there. Then I find that the belt is in need of replacement. I have a bigger lathe and do not use the small one, but would like to repair it for club use.

Thanks.

Hugh,

You can go to the Delta web site to download a manual for the LA200 and their phone number is also listed or you can just order the parts over the Internet. The procedure for changing belts is very simple as explained in the instruction manual. It shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.

Bill,
Thanks for the info. I will order one soon and fix the lathe up. Then maybe I can find another club member who would like to store it/use it for the club.
Thanks again.

Don't follow the manual! They are very casual about the replacement of the belt. They say: Remove handwheel, bearing, and pulley. It took me well over an hour to remove the pulley because the setscrew had twisted and jammed. The belt change requires ONLY that you remove the handwheel and then slide out the bearing. You then have enough room between the shaft and the housing to extract the belt. The whole job should take 5-10 minutes.

the part number is 1340949 it is call a v belt. i have the delta midi. i needed to replace the stock belt within the first week. yes, i am a hacking catcher. the replacement belts i got have lasted a little longer but they have stretched and worn pretty quickly for me.

Assuming that it did not have a double set screw (where a second setscrew is used to jam against the first one), then the most likely reason that it was tight is that a thread locking compound such as Locktite was used to prevent the screw from vibrating loose. In that case, the socket head of the screw can be easily damaged by a worn Allen key that doesn't fit tightly -- OR -- if an inch size key was used instead of metric.

What is a "hacking catcher"? I am thinking baseball player who alters software code for nefarious purposes. 😀

When I still owned a Delta Midi-Lathe I bought mine at Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft.com/default.aspx)
It's called a "v" belt but it's actually a ribbed belt.
Give them a call at 1-800-535-4482 or send them an email at custserv@woodcraft.com
I'm sure someone there would be happy to help you.

a hacking catcher is a hack, hacker, hacking(verb) butcher, one without skill, knowledge and or experience and catch to grab, catcher, one which catches. hence hacking catcher.
