bark makes a formidable projectile coming off a spinning lathe. Thank goodness for the face-shield. Thinking of purchasing a bullet-proof vest to complete my suit of armor.

Max,

How did you happen to come by this knowledge? I have heard people say that loose "bark" is worse than the "tight".

Did you buy any new toys today -- excuse me, I mean critically important tools?

Could consider modifying your technique so you're not there when some unnoticed loose chunk rips off. It really is easy to stay out of the way and cut in comfort. Of course you have to remember to cover the tablesaw to keep the oak juice from destroying it if you're not catching it with your face.

Flapping birchbark may flay my knuckles, but you won't find my body in the throw zone until the final finesse cuts.

If I am not going to save the bark for the end product, I try to pry it off with my carving chisels and rubber hammer first, esp if loose. Also going thru bark with the gouges may dull the gouge edge (IMHO) -Gretch
