Has anyone out there installed the Wolverine bases under a Baldor 8" grinder?
The heavy cast guard/dust chute appears to be in the way. My present main grinder is 30+year old American made Delta/Rockwell that has an added bolt on platform that works well. I have always liked the Wolverine adjustable platform for its ease of changing angles so I borrowed a Wolverine base and it looks like the cast guards are in the way even when the grinder is raised to the suggested height.

Since my grinder is a 7" I thought about getting a Baldor 8". Upon inspection of a Baldor, it appears that the Wolverine base interferes with the cast iron guard even more so than with my Delta. (Wolverine base installs 6-1/4 to 6-1/2 below centerline of wheel)

So if a Wolverine jig is to be installed on a grinder with cast iron guards, what is the solution? Remove the guards?

Idahohay......

The key to this is the word "suggested" in your post.

How much would you have to raise the Baldor to make it work? If we're talking about a small distance, you might want to just raise it up for minimum clearance, and try it.

What would be the drawback to having the mainshaft a little higher? A LOT higher would probably make a difference, but if the distance is small......not to worry! 😀

It should be remembered that lathe tools come in all sizes, and lengths.....and they get shorter with use. The grind wheel gets smaller as well.

There are so many variables that I wouldn't think remaining within the "suggested height" is very critical.......

You might want to check this thread on the Oneway forum:
Grinder does't fit Wolverine
There are a couple other threads that may apply too.

The centerline (of wheels) of a new 8" Baldor grinder is approximately 8-1/4" above the base. the wolverine base would need to be raised up 1-3/4 to 2" so that it was installed at Oneway's suggested 6-1/4 - 6-1/2" below the the centerline of the wheels in order for the platform (not the Varigrnd) to be at the centerline of the grinder. It looked like the Wolverine base hits he cast iron guard long before it could be raised enough.

John, do you use the Wolverine platform on that setup? I can see how he varigrind jig would work, but for some reason my brain says the platform needs to be at approximately the centerline of the wheel.

Owen, I just read the info on Oneway's forum, so it looks like the v arm would work with the guards rotated but I still am not sure about the platform.

Idahohay.......I went out and measured mine with older single speed Delta 8" grinder. The Wolverine base is 7" below the centerline of the main shaft of the grinder.

It works very well for me......I've seen no reason to think the specs can't be fudged a little.

Vertically adjustable platform rest and V-notch available

Dear Fellow Woodturners:

For several years I have supplied an aftermarket product for the Wolverine that has a V-notch that adjusts vertically. This allows you to adjust to ANY height of grinder. I have two models and one has enough adjustment to even use it with a Tormek.

Because of many requests I have received, mostly from Baldor owners, I now have a vertically adjustable platform rest support. This too is an aftermarket product for the Wolverine. You actually re-use your old 3" X 5" platform rest and the handle.

The Vertical Solution (V-notch system) is on my web site, but the platform rest support is not yet on there.
