Hello all,

I am a new member here and am just getting started in bowl turning. I have sucessfully made 3 mesquite bowls but I really don't know what I am doing. I was wondering if there is anyone in the immediate area that would be willing to come to my shop and give me some pointers on my lathe. In return, I will compensate you with mesqute, spalted hackberry, and pecan bowl blanks. However many you feel is fair. I just need to see someone do it in person and prefer doing it on my lathe with my tools so I can be sure I have everything set up right and my tools sharpened properly. I am in San Marcos and have plenty of the above mentioned blanks.

Don't really know if my compensation is adequate or not but thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone would be willing to help. I would offer to pay but my LOML and I are currently raising and saving money so we can adopt a baby since we can't seem to have children on our own.

Thank you!

Jeff,

Thanks for the sugestions on the clubs. Unfortunately, I am involved with so many different groups already that I just don't see myself having the time to make the trip into Austin or San Antonio for the meetings. Heck, I hardly have the time to do any turning or work in the shop as it is! I am sure you know how that goes!

Actually, Curtis, you can just give the nearest club a call and ask for some hands-on help at home. There will most likely be someone who lives nearby who's willing to jump on that grenade. I'm VP for our local club and this is a service we would happilly offer.

Dietrich

Thank for the suggestion Dietrich. I did have Bob Edwards from the San Antonio club contact me by e-mail graciously offering his help. I will see if he and I can hook up and get a little hands on help. I have the basics down but just need someone to show me the proper way of doing things in case I am learning bad habits!

I am a charter member of the Central Texas Woodturning Assoc. I know that finding time to go to a meeting is hard to come by, however you can learn so much, meet so many turners and get excellent info. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday at 7 pm in the American Youth works building on Ben White/35 and hope you can make at least a onetime visit. Our web site is CTWA.org and we have our newsletters on it along with pictures and other info. It also has info on our meetings. Unfortunity there are no members that live in San Marcos, some in Dripping Springs and one is Wimberly. Hope to see you at our next meeting (last one for this year). Bill Hammack 512-282-0832

Thanks for the reply Bill. It is not so much as making the time but rather making the drive and the time that goes with it! I already have a monthly board meeting in Austin on the second Tuesday of each month and HATE the Austin traffic. I think I would rather go out in the yard and roll in dog poop than deal with Austin traffic!

If you happen to talk to the member in Wimberly, would you mind mentioning me to him/her to see if they would be willing to show me a few things hands on. Like I said, I am willing to trade as much turning stock as the person wants in return for a little time on the lathe with me.

Thanks again Bill.

MesquiteMan,
Mr. Tolly is an extremely skilled and experienced turner, and you would do well to accept his generous offer. He has encouraged and inspired me to resume a long dormant interest in woodturning.

Thanks Texian, I should have posted a follow up that Jim is coming to my shop tomorrow morning for some turning help!! 😀 I am really excited and can not wait to finally get someone to show me how to do it. I have never seen anyone turn any wood other than the guys on TV.
