Anyone familiar with:

Cedar Shield/Turners Choice

I have been using it for a view months. The formula for the two above named products is the same. Cedarcide has helpful and knowledgable folks very willing to assist. Using the instructions soak 24 hours air dry 72 and turn.
Food safe and little smell. I started using the 10% of the diameter. I soon found that warping was about 1/16 if that after drying. I reduced the rough turned wall thickness to 5/8 on bowls 10 3/4 to 11 diameter and five inches deep of green stock and turned to final and finish in six days. No cracks tiny bit of warp!

So far I have experimented with cherry, maple, poplar and now oak. I am very pleased with how the product performs.

Does it work for spindle blanks and such?

I do a lot of spindle type work, will using the Cedarcide product work effectively for that - should I soak the entire blank longer/shorter than 24h?

Turners Choice

I'd never heard of Turners Choice until last night when I got my newest copy of More Woodturning magazine and was reading Q&A's from the Internet.

The question was about trying to turn a tenon on punky wood. The article went on to say how soaking punky wood in this stuff, then letting it dry for 72 hours made it usable.

I did a Google search on Turners Choice Wood Stabilizer and found a number of articles from other forums on it. One very complete and understandable response was from the scientist that developed it.

Turners Choice - I just bought a Gallon

I'm going to give it a try.

I just ordered a gallon, and for wood preservatives their shipping is free too!

I've got some punky Maple as well as some Walnut bowl blanks I'd like to try it on.

I'll let you all know how it "turns out for me". 🙂

How far does it go? It seems a gallon would be absorbed very quickly and at that price it would be costly. Do you soak the bowl green right after turning ? Thanks Gary

Cedar Shield also called Turners Choice

It goes a long way and does not wear out. I use a five gallon bucket with 3 gal. of Cedar Shield. Good buy 4 gal. Better 5 gal.one get one gal free. Free shipping and very prompt. Food safe.

I soaked some bowls

I've soaked some maple bowls in Turners Choice for over 24 hours.

Now they're drying on the workbench(next to a nested set of Walnut bowls).

First I turned off the Anchorseal I had on the Maple bowls before I soaked them in Turners Choice. I put them in a large pot (I bought for making beer) then held them down with a rock. I put some spalted maple pen blanks in too.

So I'm to the point where I can turn at least the small bowl, but the process has come to a stop.

I can't turn them at this time because my lathe broke. The inverter and motor toasted last Saturday (4 days after warranty). My neighbor was walking up the drive and asked if I was trying to make lightning. It was quite spectacular. 🙁🙁

I'll come back and write more after I've turned what was treated with Turners Choice and let you know how it went. I'll take a pic or two along the way too.

Take care

Tom

Give us the maximum/minimum measurements of the bowls after the cure, and the weights immediately after and two weeks after turning if you can.

Measurments and Weight - You Got It

Hello - I'll be happy to measure and weigh them after I final turn them. I want to know if they stay round and flat as well, so I'll let you know that too.

They seem to be heavier now. Next time I'll weigh the item before I put it into the Turners Choice, then I'll weigh it again after 72 hours (min) drying time. They both seem more solid, the small bowl seems to have a harder surface.

I'll let you know more after I get them spinning.

Tom

Thanks. It'll help determine if it's a bulk or a block action. Only two methods I'm aware of which work at controlling drying degrade. Not sure what you are hoping to gain by weighing after soaking. You've spun out a lot of water, you'll pick up more in the rewetting, but neither is the water that counts - that bound to the cellulose.
