Anyone familiar with 46-525 Rockwell Lathe?

I just bought a 1960's 46-525 Rockwell lathe. I wanted to replace the switch with a new one. The wires that were hooked up to the original switch were white, black, red, orange, and then green. Black - hot, white - common, green - ground. The motor is a rockwell 1 1/2 hp that can run on 110 or 220. Currently it is on 110. Anyone know what the red and orange are for?

Thanks
Bill

Bill,
On the motor nameplate should be a basic wiring diagram to show where each line is. I suspect that the red wire is the other 110 leg to make the 220. I don't know what the orange is for.

Hi Kurt

Thanks for the response, I took a pic of the motor and it labels the wires T1, T2,etc but cannot attach (not my day )... Maybe someone has changed this before. Very frustrating, never spent this much time on a switch before. I should get used to it, the lathe is older than I am but man these things are built.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,
Photos posted with text need to be 39k or smaller. Just post your reply, and scroll down to 'manage attachments'. The browser will come up and you type in the file name or click on open to add to your post. Hope this helps. I would like to see the diagram.

Thanks, they were to large. This should work ( I hope )

Bill, the safest bet here would be to take the photo, or better yet, the motor, to your local motor repair shop and ask them how to wire this. The glare in the photo is hiding some of the numbers, but unless you can find some wire identification on the other ends, some expert help is probably in order here. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for your help. Michael, the one link has what the standards for matching the colors with the #'s. That just clicked a little light in my head and I think I've got it.

Thanks Again!!!

Wiring a 46-525 Rockwell Lathe

The switch is a Furnas Electric 12BA21T 2 PL OPN MAN STRT switch (2 pole open, manual start switch) which is good for up to 1HP motors. The white and black wires go to the switch. These are the power input wires from the plug and can be 110 or 220 since the switch makes or breaks both wires.

The red and the orange wires are the power output wires from the switch to the motor with the red wire corresponding to the white wire and the orange wire corresponding to the black wire.

Hook up the switch with the black and white on one side and the red and orange on the opposite side. Then make connections at the motor using the wiring diagram on the motor plate (either 110 or 220) by substituting the red wire for “white†on the diagram and substitute the orange wire for “black†on the diagram.
