I have intermittently had a????rasping (hard to describe) noise that seems to be at higher speeds and disappears with playing with the speed. Can't tell where by putting my ear to the box, pulley area. Several months ago it appeared and then disappeared. Heard again a few days ago, but not yesterday (maybe I wasn't at that speed). Any ideas?? Gretch

When it happens again use a piece of tubing (garden hose works), put it to your ear and move along the lathe. The sound will get louder as you near the source. This is an old mechanic's trick for a noise in an engine. I just heard this not that I'm the old mechanic (duck).

Duh! Did you call One Way? Those folks have heard everything and can probably help you eliminate areas of concern. I use them whenever I can.

Gretch,
This very subject has been flogged over and over on the Oneway discussion group. Oneway's (Kevin) reply will be basically that it doesn't hurt a thing.
My 1640 is over 3 years old and has had the same symptoms as your machine from day one. Kevin did offer to replace the bearings if I boxed up the spindle "cartridge" and do without until he could get to it and send it back. If you try this route, there will be no offer of a swap out "cartridge" service. To this day, I live with the whine.

"whine"

Thanks Bob, that was helpful. Since it disappeared before, I wasn't that concerned, but since there was another thread on noises it reminded me of it, and my fingers were on the keyboard, not the phone. Gretch
