Ancient Pine

I am sure that Mr. Thur was thrilled, however I think that it would have been more appropriate for a finding of that magnitude to have been given to a museum or college or university

Gary,

Don received only half of the log. If the landowner wants to donate a portion of the remainder, he's free to do so, but it's really not Don's responsibility. From the story, they have determined the age of the tree at the time of the fall, so Don had to have already given the University a "baloney" slice or bolt to reveal the annular ring structure. That would be sufficient for most scientific purposes wouldn't it?

Of course, donating an 8,000-year old bowl could be a nifty way to get your work into a museum. 😀

Please post photo

Don,
I hope you will post a photo or two of the finished products. I'm jealous. It would be a rare honor to turn such a piece of wood.

What an exciting prospect to turn a vessel from wood of that vintage. It staggers the mind, I would be tempted to jump right in and give it a go myself but I'm not sure my feeble talents would do it justice, and would probably seek out an individual that has the appropriate skill to make a spectacular piece.

Actually, thus far I have completed 4 major pieces (plus the cores) of which 3 will be donated by commissioning patrons to a local government and a museum and a university. I hope to be in a position to submit pictures very shortly as I will be taking 2 for a photo-shoot this afternoon. With these pieces, I don't trust myself to do them justice with my nil-photography skills.

Don,

Congratulations on an amazing opportunity. If it were me, I'd be sweating bullets.

Please post your photos when they're available.

old wood

Don....my hat is off to you....truly a "once in a lifetime" shot. Don't pay attention to "Gary".....if it were his, it would likely end up rotten and forgotten in some musty museum basement.
